Split Audio - volume decreases.

I recently decided to hook my xbox up to the PC. I have it running of a VGA switchbox for the monitor and tis great... Only one problem - the sound. I have a 2.1 system, not much but it does the job. I have a 3.5mm splitter to split the audio from the speakers to the xbox and pc.
It works grand, except when playing the xbox and I turn the PC on the volume decreases dramatically on both systems. What is the cause of this? And what are my options for a resolution??

Apologies mods if this isnt the right forum - feel free to move!!

you cannot split the signal passively like that, you need a proper switch, connect the xobx directly to the monitor and see if the issue improves, if it does get a proper audio switch and use that.
