Was looking at the specs for the Touch and it appears that it supports H.264 and Mp4 files.

How would you tell if your files are H.264 and MP4 compatible?

Does the Touch come with conversion software or software for ripping dvds etc?

I use Videora to convert video for my touch, works perfectly.

No software is supplied, you have to do all of that yourself. Depending on what platform you are using there are plenty of free options out there. On Mac I mostly use Visual Hub or QuickTime Pro. Of course you can get QT Pro for Windows too, and its a great option in that there are many export options for iPod and iPhone formats.

You will need to put video on as m4v format, but any decent quality .mov should give you a nicely converted file using appropriate software.

Most the stuff that I would have at home would be avi files. So that means that if the touch is to be any use to me I would have to convert all my files?

FOr a typical tv show/film how long would this take on average (I know this is machine dependant 2gb ram 2.2ghz core duo vista)

Yes, unfortunately it does mean that all AVIs would have to be converted in order to be even able to load them onto the Touch.

As to how long it takes, it depends on your system specs, the program you're using to convert, the settings used for the output file, the length of the file, etc so it's hard to give you a pretty accurate estimate. On my 2.4Ghz MacBook Pro, using iSquint, an episode of Family Guy which is around 25 minutes long, will take about 6 minutes if I convert it for viewing on the iPod only (lower resolutions, around 320 x 240) - if converted for higher resolutions, closer to the original AVI file (640 X 480) and which is geared to look good on a TV, it takes around 14 minutes for the same clip.
