Don't know much about ipods. I currently have an ancient Creative which I need to replace and was thinking of getting a one of the above.
I've read a bit about each and really like the look of the Touch.

Would I be silly to buy the touch when I can get way more memory for less money with the Ipod classic?

All help is very much appreciated.

It depends on what you want really. If you have a massive collection of music and 80gb is required then the classic is the obvious choice, but if on the otherhand you'd be happy with 32gb of storage wifi and the price tag then go for the itouch

Well how much music and movies have you got? :)

I was in the same situation a while back. Was in the apple store in ny and was debating whether or not to get a 160gb classic or 16gb touch....so I did the obvious and bought an 80gb classic and an 8gb touch:rolleyes: Impulsive and stupid! Anyway..the touch was great but I couldn't fit my itunes library on it and the novelty eventually wore off and I sold the touch. So if you can live with the capacity of the touch then i'd recommend it, only thing though is that the classics battery will last longer which is handy for long trips.

At least you can get a lot more on a Touch now than when they first came out. If you are ok with chopping and changing your music/videos every so often I would def say the Touch. You are getting more than just an MP3 player afterall, sacrificing space and wallet weight of course.

Thanks guys, think I'll go with the Touch, it looks so cool!!

One other question I have It says it can store 3,500 songs, 20,000 photos and up to 20 hours of video.

Does this mean that if I have all 3500 songs on it that it won't be able to take anything else onto it, will the memory be full?

    Thanks.

Yep memory would be close to full. It's supposed to be 3500 songs OR 20000 photos OR 20 hours of video.

I'd recommend downloading itunes first and looking at their store. They've a new application area which contains stuff mostly for the touch/iPhone. See if any of that stuff takes your fancy. If not, get the Classic.

I've the classic. It does everything the touch does, perhaps less flamboyantly, but with far more room for everything. I've just got half mine full and I've 5,500 songs, 500 pics and dozens of videos(some full length films too!)

The touch is less reliable as far as I know.

Alternativelt, you could get the classic and get the iPhone for e50 in Carphone Warehouse later in the year!!!

Not really tbh. It just plays music and video, but it doesn't have wifi or apps capabilities. You can buy games though, not that they are very good, but if you want to make all the distinctions clear :)

I was faced with the more or less the same choice a few weeks ago as my Creative Zen V Plus was getting full at 4 GB.

I chose an iPod Touch 32GB because I also want to watch videos and vodcasts and the Touch's screen is very good for this and bigger than that of the Classic.

It all depends on how much music you have and how important the bigger screen is.

I'll be getting my Touch tomorrow. Have you put any Videos onto yours yet? How much memory do they take up?

    Cheers

I bought an ipod touch on Monday, depends on what way the video is encoded joey, I use Videora converter by Red Kawa to convert my videos for teh touch. It's free and does the job pretty well but the files were around twice original size after conversion.
Excellent gadget, but I had a lot of hassle syncing until I upgraded the firmware to version 2.0. Before that it was very very irritating as it kept giving me an error message that the device was not connected or could not be written to. That error message stopped after I upgraded from 1.4 firmware to 2.0. I'm a bit pissed off that it cost me €7.99 to upgrade but for my piece of mind alone it was worth it as the error messages were very frustrating.

Easily. I love my touch, best gadget I've ever bought! Since the 2.0 patch the app's you can buy have made it the funnest hand held device I've owned since tetris on the gameboy, I can make music when I'm bored now(mixing/sequencing)!

Its not too expensive in America with the exchange rate, its $299 for the 8 gb model which is under 200 euros. :)

one very important point, as watched my wife knock my classic ipod from 5 feet on to tiles, the touch has no harddrive. and should be better at taking knocks.

Provided of course the glass screen doesn't crack :D

I have an ipod touch 32gb myself and have to say it's the dogs wobbley bits. I use it all the time and comes in to it's own if you get a speaker station (nothing like listening to a bit of Nirvana whilst working out in the morning before work). Most of the speaker stations double up as a charger too.

I have a fair whack of music myself, 60+ gigs, but I only listen to about 20-30 albums at a time and still have 20+ gigs free on it. I find myself browsing the net whilst watching TV, downloading the latest free apps and playing about with those. There's an awful lot to chose from like some addictive games like texas holden, solitare, minesweeper, the list goes on and on. The inbuilt safari browser is the business and the interface itself of the device is soo intuitive. I was quite surprised by how amasingly easy it is to use. I'd recommend it.

Sorry in advance if I am not supposed to talk about this but I was wondering if there is any risk in jailbreaking an ipod touch? I bought one in New York and wanted to find out more about jailbreaking it, the apps seem prety cool but I don't want to break it.

Also, suddenly my touch won't connect to my wireless network, it states unable to connect.

Just upgrade to the latest firmware via i-tunes and it'll install the new apps download er.. app. There's hundreds of free games and apps on their as well as payable ones.

Best to check out the mobile phone forum. There's a post there dedicated to jailbreaking. Not sure about doing same to a touch rather than i-phone but I'm sure it's possible. Personally, with the ability to download apps officially, I don't see the point anymore.

Has to be a classic if your strictly going for an MP3/MP4 Player!
Ipod touch/iphone are a waste of money+ there are hotspots/internet cafés on every corner of the earth these days anyway so who needs internet on der phone + most people have laptops if they really are proper business people!
i'm happy with my sony ericson and my 80 gb classic!!

As Far as I know you can't brick the ipod touch.
Jailbroke mine and got some weird messages, white text scrolling up the screen after about ten minutes and I thought I had bricked it.
Turns out, all you have to do is make sure it's connected to the usb cable and hold down the power button and the back button simultaneously until you see the "connect this ipod to a pc" icon and it will restore to factory settings.
I ran the jailbreak again and it worked. I was still having problems with syncing the ipod with itunes tho, I kept getting a message telling me that the ipod was not connected or that it could not be written to, so I decided to try the latest Apple firmware update version 2.0
I installed the new 2.0 update and now the ipod is working without any error messages and the installer thingy has a lot of software available, tho a lot of it has to be paid for which is a bit of a bummer.
I'm glad I upgraded mine tho, and I do think the version 2.0 is better than the jailbreak. There seems to be a lot more apps and other stuff available.
