Job Applications - No acknowledgement

    Folks,

Is it normal for some companies not to respond to an application for a position? I appreciate they may have a huge number of cv's/applications to get through but to not even send a Dear John response by email/post is a bit annoying.
Would anyone advise contacting the hr dept of a company direct, see if they got the application and express a keen interest. Applied for a job about 4 weeks ago (dream position) but not a sausage in terms of response.

    Thanks

Absolutely no harm in giving them a ring.

The reason you got no response in the first place is probably due to the lazy HR person.

It's not quite as bad as it used to be; back in the dark days after the dot com crash (2001 - 2003 or so), I was surprised when I did get a response from an agency or company. But yes, it's still not all that unusual.

As dublindude days, it's most likely laziness from the HR person. They often don't realise that while it's just part of their day to get job applications, it might be a very big deal to the applicant.

At this stage I am getting about a 1 in 20 response rate to applications if just email/click apply button on job search engine. The rate increases to maybe 1 in 3 if a email with follow up email or phone call. Still haven't got a job though but I am looking to make a big move and am kind of picky which is slowing things down a bit.

    Well..

Im having similar trouble, have been searching for IT dev work outside of Dublin for 6 weeks or so. Have a good CV and solid experience, the jobs are advertised via the agencies, I know I can handle any of them but still nothing but a confirmation call from them to promise to get straight onto the client.

The agencies in the West are trippin over each other chasing the same few jobs. Its an employers market. I rekon we're not hearing back b/c the companies are sick to death of the phone calls. I know from my last job whenever a position was posted on the companies website with explicitly saying 'no agencies please' the desk was inundated for days from them.

What do you guys think of going over the head of the agency? in one or two cases Ive found the job as a direct advertisement by the company but Ive been told my application has gone in.

In a similar position myself. Applied for a job I would love about 5 weeks and heard nothing. Was really down about it cos thought I hadn't got it.
But rang them this morning and they said they are still short-listing as they have so many candidates.

I just rang then and asked what stage they were at with this competition.
Defo no harm ringing them if it is the job of your dreams!!!

this seems to be the norm- i have applied for loads of jobs & have not got responses or else waiting a long time so you are not the only one. It is annoying but thereis no harm whatsoever in ringing.
