What should I pick up in the way of Autechre, Boards of Canada and Luke Vibert?

Also, any other recommendations in the same vein?

    Autechre:

    - Try Incunabula for earlier, beat-oriented stuff.
    - Try LP5 or Confield for more complex, "mathematical"/algorithmic, academic stuff.
    - I reckon Tri Repetae strikes a good balance between the above two points.
    - Quaristice was their latest offering although I personally wasn't gone on it!

    BOC:
    - I'd recommend Geogaddi or Music Has The Right To Children to start off with.

    Luke Vibert:
    - Chicago, Detroit, Redruth is the only Vibert album I have and I do love it lots
Also, any other recommendations in the same vein?

Squarepusher is vital listening if you're getting into IDM, in my opinion:
    - Do You Know Squarepusher is very intricate, very detailed, some amazing lyrics too hidden away behind all the crazy breakbeats.
    - Hard Normal Daddy is probably my favourite Squarepusher offering. Almost seamless mixture of live/"real" playing combined with the usual intricate programming. Almost sounds like something out of the 70s but also from 20 years in the future... in a weird way...
    - Burning'n'Tree if you like your Drum'n'Bass :)
    - Hello Everything is pretty good and is pretty easy to listen to.

Other artists you could eventually check out:
    - Amon Tobin
    - μZiq
    - The Higher Intelligence Agency
    - Mouse on Mars
    - Kinesthesia
    - Richard Devine
    - Boxcutter
    - And the Aphex Twin, but I'll assume you knew that ;)

    Enjoy :)

Bah, have both the BOC ones. Are they considered their best yeah? I've got a good bit of Squarepusher but I might pick up Hard Normal Daddy, what is My Big Red Car on?

I've got Supermodified by Amon Tobin, I know of one other album, Bricolage. Is it any good?

They're the best I've heard anyway... you might also pick up Hi Scores (available on emusic.com) or The Campfire Headphase.

I don't have that one, but Out From Out Where is another good one I forgot to mention. There's also been talk of Foley Room here although I haven't heard it yet.

I would add 'Amber' to Cornbb's list above, I think with Autechre start from the beginning with 'Incunabula' and work your way in order of release... they do become more complex as you go along and I would agree with Cornbb in that the latest release isn't much use, I'd say cr*p in fact! - I do hear that it requires a lot of listens to sink in, feck that!

The list of amazing IDM releases from over the years is vast but here are a few more for you to put on a wish-list. Will start with some older stuff and post another day re more recent releases...

Two crucial compilations if you don't have them are the Artificial Intelligence albums from Warp, an essential part of IDM history and still as good now as they were all those years ago... for Artificial Intelligence II, try get a hold of the original release with the 2nd Disc -

    http://www.discogs.com/release/2964

    http://www.discogs.com/release/549

And everything else released in the Artificial Intelligence series from Warp (which does include Autechre and Black Dog to follow)...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_Intelligence_(series)

The Black Dog are vital, right up to their most recent release (well, one member has remained on - the rest are now Plaid). They tend to swing between techno, IDM and ambient at times.

    http://www.discogs.com/artist/Black+Dog%2C+The

Any album by them is essential, as an easy start though you could get the recent compilation/best of released on Soma (well, the 1st CD is a best of, the 2nd disc is actually an early called 'Parallel') -

    http://www.discogs.com/release/890689

Plaid then are also excellent, start from the beginning with 'Not For Threes' -

    http://www.discogs.com/release/3657

I love their 'Trainer' release which is basically a collection of early release under various aliases... swinging more towards early techno here but really fantastic, amazing drum programming and playful melodies all over, love it.

Luke Slater's 7th Pearl release, 'The Four Cornered Room' is an absolutely stunning album which I literally can't get enough of, one of the most important IDM releases IMO...

    http://www.discogs.com/release/85674

An essential DJ mix from Warp (which is still available from warpmart.com) -

    http://www.discogs.com/release/3623

B12 are mentioned in the AI list on wikipedia above - their second album 'Time Tourist' is also essential.

    http://www.discogs.com/release/3622

B12 are actually due to release a box-set later this year which will include some very rare material and I personally can't wait for this!

    http://www.b12records.com/#comingsoon

The first album on the above is now available and worth getting but not as good as their older material... it is their first release though since Time Tourist in '96. It's the 2nd release further down that I am counting down for!

    Will add more another evening.

While I think of them too, Ultramarine have some amazing albums, most notably 'A Users Guide' and 'Bel Air' -

    http://www.discogs.com/release/66920

    http://www.discogs.com/release/150254

Neither listed as IDM but I would put them in that category of music too, especially 'A Users Guide'.

You might already have these, but if not, have a listen to Future Sound of London - 'Lifeforms' if you like ambient stuff; 'Accelerator' or 'Pulse EPs' if you like early 90s techno.

I also would recommend The Orb - 'Adventures beyond the Ultraworld'. It's a mix of ambient and trippy dub. 'Little Fluffy Clouds' is on this album.

A lot of the albums listed on this thread can be found in Tower / HMV / online for under a tenner. WarpMart is a handy way to pick up 'famous' Warp artists and some of the early releases such as the AI series mentioned above.

    Good luck!

Try Oval, Speedy J (A shocking Hobby is an underrated classic) or Venetian Snares stuff if you havn't already (maybe My Downfall OST to start off with).

Never bought that album A Shocking Hobby, must pick it up, same for Loudboxer - I believe that's a right belter of a techno album!

Will add more as I think of them...

Alter Ego - Decoding The Hacker Myth (this was early Alter Ego, long before the electro buzz they are on now)

    http://www.discogs.com/release/892

    Fantastic album.

buy anything by luke vibert, especially "yoseph" which is one of my favourite albums of all time. i wasn't gone on it at first but now i love it, theres some great oldskool analogue sounds on there. also any BOC album is worth getting. autechre's early stuff tends to be more accessible than their later stuff. and if you are thinking about getting "hard normal daddy" think no more, just get it cos its an excellant album

also another of my favourites is mu-ziq, get "tango n vective" "bluff limbo" "lunatic harness" hell anything by this guy is great, he's a genius. and yeah autechre "amber" as someone said previously is brilliant, my personal favourite autechre album. also if you are lucky enough to find a copy get their e.p called "garbage" it contains one of the most moving and beautiful ambient songs i've ever heard.

Did someone say Amon Tobin? ;)

The man is a genius. Have all his albums, and not really a bad one among them (there's one called the Bridge which is more of a compilation so not really worth a buy if you've got a few of his other albums.) If you're a fan of DJ Shadow then Bricolage is a must - kinda trip-hoppy with a bit of jungle thrown in for good measure. Permutation is maybe his best imo (although I'd probs proclaim a different album his best next week :p) Out from Out Where is great, his style is becoming even more 'Amon Tobin' for want of a better phrase. Also Foley Room - there was a thread on this a good few months back, is probably his most experimental work to date. A combination of field recordings and clever samples, another amazing work. That's a brief overview of some of his very intricate work.

Being pedantic I dunno if it's IDM though, can't really describe it that easily. Buy and enjoy though! :)
