Remote Shut Down of XP from OS X

    Hi guys,
I have MS Remote Desktop installed on my iMac. I am currently connected remotely to my XP box. Everything is cool, everything is groovy-ish..

When I click on Start I only have options for Log Off and Disconnect. It seems there are no options for Shut Down if you're connected remotely.

I have Googled around the place but I couldn't find a solution.

I have a shutdown.cmd file on the XP desktop that contains the command 'shutdown -t 25' which should shutdown the local PC after 25 seconds. When I run this command, the cmd window just goes on a loop and it doesn't execute properly. Can I run commands when remoted in? Is the above shutdown command correct?

Can I bring up the Ctrl + Alt + Del menu in XP while connected remotely via OS X?

Are there any other options to remotely shutdown XP from OS X?

    Bah! :pac:

Just shut down the XP machine there by right clicking on taskbar > task manager > 'users (i think)' > shut down.

But if there are other options, fire away. :)

Fire up an XP command shell by Start Menu -> Run -> cmd
    In the shell, type
    shutdown [-r] -t 20

Use the -r option to restart instead of shutting down.
Change 20 to the number of seconds you want to wait before shutting down (or restarting if -r.)

As for your shutdown.bat file, it might work better if you put a 'pause' in there before it exits? Just guessing here though.

I'm a little confused with your problem. If you are remoting into a XP machine with remote desktop and you click start, you have two options, logoff and shutdown ( at least I have ). Its the same options you have if you were actually on the XP machine. If you are not getting these options just press ctrl+alt+del on the Mac and you will get the 'do what you want with me' dialog box.

The only difficulties I had was getting used to the shift+ctrl for the right click button.

Very odd, my options are "Log Off" and "Disconnect". And it's like that remote-desktopping from XP to XP and from OS X to XP, various different XP boxes. Can you double-check that?

OP, I don't have a Windows XP box around to test but I use Remote Desktop to log into a Windows Home Server - and I do also have Logoff and Shutdown options. I can restart/shut down, exactly as if I was sitting in front of it - just like Muggyog and Turly mentioned for XP.

Yes, I dont have to double check, MS remote desktop works as I described in my last post.

I dont currently connect to a XP Desktop (using Win Server 2003) but can never remember it being different. I'm using an older client version, MS Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac Version 1.0.3(040913).

What happens when you do a ctrl+alt+del?

So neither of you are using XP then.
I can restart/shut down, exactly as if I was sitting in front of it - just like Muggyog and Turly mentioned for XP.
    J-blk, I mentioned no such thing :-)
From XP/Mac to XP, I have to resort to the "Start->Run->cmd->shutdown -r" trick to reboot XP remotely.
I'm not at my Mac right now so I don't know what happens on Ctrl-Alt-Del...

Yep, sorry about that - for some reason I read "Disconnect" as "Shut Down"

WHS that I'm using is also Windows Server 2003 derived so it may indeed differ from XP. Maybe it has to do with Fast User Switching or other login options enabled by default in XP but not the Server OSes?

When I remote from Leopard to XP I only have options to Log Off and Disconnect. I won't able to test the CTRL ALT DEL until Monday.
I'm using V2 of MS Remote Desktop for Mac OS X.

A quick google gives the info - just press Ctrl-Alt-END (not DEL) and you'll get the "remote" Ctrl-Alt-Del panel.

Ya larn sumtin new every day.

Edit: That's on the PC, of course. Presumably Ctrl-Alt-Del would work on the Mac - will give it a lash later and report...

I'm not using XP but I do have a Mac and I know that there is no END key on it!

Just setup a XP Pro machine for remote and I am also getting the 'disconnect' instead of 'Shut Down'. ctrl+alt+del does work however.

    Interesting 'feature'!
