    I just over the last week created my 1st website for my photography :) Just said feck it ive wanted to do it for awhile so ill just do it! Its entirely created/designed by myself.

    Its kinda untidy and one of the galleries is bigger than the others.

    You need atleast a res of 1024 x 768 to view it and flash player 8 for the galleries.

    http://www.darrencarlinphoto.com/

    Im most likely going change it up over the next while, Im not really into the flash stuff for some reason.. Maybe im just doing it wrong.

    I literally have more than enough time to make a cup of tea if I wanted while your gallery loads...each time!

    Taking way too long, I'd just get pissed off if I was looking through it and close the tab.

    Photos are lightning quick here and I'm on about electric lightning.

    The whole sight is quiet slow.
    And no home on the galleries.Was this made in photoshop cos its loads in sections like slices

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,281 ✭✭✭Ricky91t

    How did you make it?I quiet like the gallery viewer

    Another thing i dont like is the number and email cant be copied

    No need for that challengemaster leave your personal feelings towards me in the other thread thanks. Could have just said it was slow loading up.

    Animal rights you must have some internet connection lol.

    I will agree its slow but its the way I saved all the images before making the gallery the whole website itself is just over 17mb and I think it could be alot smaller! Its something ill fix for the next design.

    I designed the background and buttons in photoshop and brought them into adobe flash where I added the pictures and script. If your interested I could do something up for you.

    Im not sure you could be using IE but in Mozilla the galleries open in new tabs so you can just exit the tab to bring you back to the galleries. It was convient for me at the time..

    Ah yes I didnt like that I couldn't copy them either ill fix that for sure!

    Thanks for comments, im quite happy simply because its my 1st attempt!

    The pictures are extremely fast, prob the fastest I've ever come across on a website.

    I've doublechecked 4 times now and yes the pictures are still superfast.
    The Skate section anyway, the People section takes ages to get on but when I do get there the pictures are extremely fast.

    Whats your connection speed?

    At OP im on 512 kbs connection and the gallery takes atleast a minute to load.Im not bothered but maybe if some of them skateboarders get a business card off you and are only on dial they will loose interest very quickly!Id definetly reduce the image size down atleast 60%.So for us people on slow connections.
    For a first time its very ood and the gallery issues aren't too bad nice work!
    Must download the adobe flash trial :pac:

    Yeah i noticed the new tab opens for the gallery and iv just retested the siter and it much quicker!
    I opened the abstract album(didnt open it yet) and it was nice and quick.But now the travel one is just loading

    Sorry about the constant edit.But you "night" album according to mozilla page info is over 3mb!

    eh.. right.. :confused: I'm just giving my honest opinion, as always. I've no personal feelings towards you.. methinks you're taking things a bit too much to heart here.

    AnimalRights: The reason they're fast changing pics is because the way its working, it loads every picture (full res) into your cache first, thats where the massive delay is. You're mistaking it for image swap time. What I'm talking about is the massive wait for it to get everything into your cache. The idea is great, if you're on like 100mb broadband. I'm on 3mb and after 3-4 mins waiting for the people section to load I just got annoyed and closed the tab.

    He's talking about something completly different. He means the time it takes to change the image from one to another.

    Initally loading is what everyone else bar AnimalRights means.. which is really slow, as it pre-loads every pic into your cache. As daz just said this is about 17mb or so? So, you're downloading it all into cache, but then just viewing from cache so there's no wait.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,067 ✭✭✭AnimalRights

    You explained it better that time. ;)
    I get what your saying to, 1st section you get into straight away and the rest is...................
    Why I assumed at 1st the rest were a work in progress. :cool:
    For a 1st attempt he's not far off a good webby, wish I knew how to make a webby. :pac:

    i know what hes talking about but he never mentioned any loading times so i assumed it was all ok loading quiet quick!

    As for your 3-4 mins that is terrible your connection must be slow cos it took me around one minute to load and im on a slow connection.It should of taken you about 20 seconds to load:confused:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,930 ✭✭✭✭challengemaster

    My connection is fine, I know I've been downloading today already ;)

    300kb/s steady.

    Skate section loads quick enough, but compared to the people section..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭dazftw

    flash gallery sizes

    travel = 8.32mb
    structure = 427kb
    skate = 562kb
    people = 3.81mb
    night = 3.28mb
    abstract = 86.kb

    travel, people and night can be improved :p

    I feel if I had one of those loading bars it might seem shorter while loading up, thats the 1st thing that hit me that it was annoying loading on a blank screen.

    Go on to www.alhigginsphotography.com were on the same hosting. Although his flash galleries are probably going be alot smaller. Its worth to see the difference.

    EDIT: oh I think hes putting up pictures or something theres no pictures at all on there :p

    lol sorry that was worded badly.What web application are your galleries made in?Like simple viewer etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭dazftw

    I dont think I use anything like that. Im going download this simple viewer yoke though.

    Damn I feel stupid now ha

    EDIT: I think I know now, the galleries themselves are made entirely in adobe flash.. at 1st I was using the the app that came with photoshop for making galleries but I didnt like it.. so I just made it all custom..

    Thats probably not what your talking about at all.. hah

    Well done on putting something together. :cool:

    My comments:

    - Images are way too big, reduce them as web sized and they will load tons faster
    - Need a back button in the gallery if available

    Will look again a bit later when I get some time.

    Images are too big file size or dimensions?

    I was going to keep a return to gallery button on the pictures but I didnt know how to keep the link there when it was going to be a flash file..?

    Your shots look jagged to me. Flash does that to images that are resized in flash, or are being tweened. Resize them to the actual size you have them in flash and they should look fine. I think that maybe the reason why the galleries are so large.

    The file size is huge, how about preloader?

    The galleries don't open up in a new tab for me either.

    If you want to get business from this: It's good for a beginner, but potential customers won't like it on the basis that most people are used to looking at professionally built templates. If I was potential customer (with no web design knowledge) looking through portfolios, yours would pale in comparison to the free templates available.

    Good work though, but try and resize and compress in photoshop, you should see drastic difference.

    Im going for a fully custom desgin using templates is a lazy way out for me, even though they are better!

    I was going to add a preloader but im redesigning the whole thing without flash so theres no need. Im just trying to come up with ideas going to use two colors white and another.. not sure yet though.

    Im going to really work on the compression stuff.

    about the tabs, I dont know they work fine for me in mozilla but in IE they dont :( again this is something ill have to sort out :)

    thanks

    Check out lightview, you might like it :)

    Or if you wanted to keep flash handling each gallery, you could use lightwindow to open up a modal window to display the flash gallery

    I was actually look around earlier, I found a website that had all thumbnail views for the pictures then you click on it and the image comes up. I was looking for something like this since I started making the site.

    Its on this site!

    Home page is fine - okay layout
    when you click any set, one cannot get back to the home page, internet 101. No navigational structure at all.
    also at the end of a set you should not display a '>'
