    Just a quick question;

    can I claim back sales tax that I pay in a shop in the States? And if so, how? Also, is it different for each State?

    Thanks

    As far as I know you can't, it's different for each state it can go from 0-15% or so, I think it's 0% in Chicago.

    Sales taxes are different by state, and also may be different by county or municipality.

    It will also depend on what you're purchasing. For example, New York state has a sales tax of 4%. The individual county or municipality will add on their own percentage on top of this. In New York City, the sales tax is 8.375% (4% state, 4% city, 0.375% MTA), but you don't pay the state tax on clothing or footwear, just the local one. Therefore, you'll pay 4.375 tax on clothing and footwear in NYC.

    It may sound confusing, but in reality it's nothing to worry about. It's calculated at the till by the register, so just bear in mind that the price displayed on the shelf or item is the pre-sales tax price, and the tax will be added when you purchase.

    Regarding claiming the tax back, you used to be able to do it at some of the airports as you departed. AFAIK this is not possible anymore, although as an international shopper some stores will offer you a discount equalling the amount of tax you would pay. I know Macy's do it. http://www1.macys.com/store/about/visitor/index.jsp

    TBH, a lot of the stuff you'll be buying will be a lot cheaper than at home, so even with the sales tax, you're still saving a fair bit.

    Massachusetts are having a sales tax holiday on Aug 16th and 17th so if you are shopping there those days the 5% sales tax will not apply, except if you are buy a boat or a car.
