PS3 making wierd noises long after powerdown

    This is a strange one and not sure if I had the issue since I had the unit but only noticed it a few weeks ago.

    Scenario :
    ========
    1. Wow, I'm watching some really cool videos, then jumping into some SSD, then maybe some PJM. I may leave it folding some nano machines for a few hours.

    2. Watch a movie and turn the unit off

    What I experience:
    ==============
    If I put the unit into standby, I hear nothing.
    If I disconnect the power cord, I then hear some wierd noises from inside the box. These noises could go on for about 2 or 3 minutes. Something I've never experienced before. It's not the HDD spinning down, it's not the BD Tray. I don't know how to explain the sound properly but it almost sounds like a VERY LOUD [relatively speaking] capacitor discharge.

    Anyone else experience this. You do have to put your ear quite close to the vent to hear it but not right up to it.

    It doesn't matter if I stand the PS3 horizontally or vertically.

    yea mine actually does this aswell, if you turn of the system using the controller and the red stand by light is on its grand but when i flick the switch at the back to turn off completely thats when the noise starts.
    Its kinda like a small high pitched squeeling is the only way i can describe it coming from the console.
    Dunno if this is the same as your problem but this has been happening to mine for a while now.

    Most likely it has to do with rapid cooling of metals and semi-conductors within the PS3 itself, seeing as it gets quite warm in there! As you're not hearing the noise when the PS3 is on standby, and therefore still 'on', just receiving less power, if there is any cooling going on inside the console it is likely to be happening much more slowly. However, when you flick the switch at the back/pull out the plug, no electricity to the unit means no heat, so the components inside start to cool quite rapidly. Rapidly cooling metal usually sounds like screeching. Heat energy --> sound energy and all that.

    So in summary, nothing to worry about.

    (Always ensure your PS3 is in a well ventilated area, and maybe give the fan on the back a quick vacuum.)

    Just started happening to me too. No noise when I put it into stand-by but the second I flick the switch at the back I get this loud and disconcerting static-electricity like noise.
