Apologies if this is in the stickies but I did have a look.

Basically credit crunch and all that - I'm considering cancelling my sky subscription.

Can I still keep the box and then what are you left with?

Free to air channels and can I tune rte etc in through the box still?

Thanks in advance for any help.

    take out your sky card.
    Unplug the box.
    Restart the box.
Those are the channels you will have
(you will also be able to add channel 4 via other channels)

    Update:

    Movies: Truemovies, Film4, World Movies...

I was wondering is there a way of getting the british EPG on a regular Sky Box before or after one cancels his subscription ?

To get UK EPG go to Sky news. Press Red Button and go into the interactive service.
    Remove the viewing card
    Press Backup to leave interactive
Box should say "Searching for Channels" (or simmilar)
When the EPG comes up 101 should be bbc1

To go back to the Irish EPG just repeat the process putting the card into the box when on Sky News Interactive

Is it possible to revert to the UK EPG without a Sky card? My In-Laws have my old Grundig Digibox, despite being unplugged for 6 months and with no card in it, it still has the Irish EPG on it, which is not much use without the Sky sub. I tried inserting a credit card and going in to Sky News and then interactive, removing the card and then Backup, I did this several times and once it reverted to the UK EPG but then a couple of seconds lated it returned to the Irish EPG. I forced a software download as well, made no odds. Should I bring my Sky card with me and try that, do you think it will then stay on the UK EPG permanently? (They live in Wexford, have no internet, so I'm snookered for info once I get there)

A friend of mine lives in Derry and has offered to pretend that his Sky card has been damaged, and send me his replacement, if I insert the card in the machine referred to in the post above will it make the EPG become a UK one? Please guys, someone reply, don't want to put him to the hassle if this won't work.

Assuming they don't send a kill signal to the card (they will deactivate its paid content no matter what...)

Far easier is just give him the 20 sterling to get you an FTV card which will give you Channel 5 (+ associated channels) as well as the UK EPG.

They kill "lost" cards. Only cancelled sub cards don't get killed.

For £21 he can get you a Sky FTV card. Better option. You can get up to 4 I think for one household separate to any Sky sub you may or may not have,

If you connect an old digibox and viewing card (cancelled) back to the dish will it bring up the UK or Irish epg ? I heard that by doing this the old viewing card in theory becomes a freesat card. Is that true ?

Is this really true? - Cancel prescription, remove card, restart box, and get all of these channels still? I'm impressed.

No. There is no such thing as a Freesat card.

There is a FTV card (Freesat-from-sky), it adds Five, Five Live , etc and is same as a cancelled UK sub, not Irish sub.

    Go 501 (sky news)
    press interactive
    wait...
    remove card
    press backup.
    Do NOT reinsert card.

You then have UK EPG, go through channels from 101 to see which work. Since there is no card, it's the same as no subscription.

Freesat is a BBC/ITV branding of most of the free channels with a different EPG and Interactive. You need a Freesat receiver. It gets no extra channels other than an hour or so a week via red button of ITV HD. The ITV HD can be received on some ordinary FTA HD receivers.

A regular non-SkyHD, Sky box can't receive any HD.

Isnt BBC HD on the UK EPG , and if so , if I have HD box , would this process be a workaround to get BBC HD recording on my HD box ?

    No
    Sky+ and SkyHD recording needs a card/sub.

You need the channel on the EPG AND a valid viewing card with Recording sub (In UK you can get a recording only sub for Free channels only).
