My first time posting a video up here so I thought I'd share some Stochelo Rosenberg/Bireli Lagrene. I came accross these guys on the web looking for Django Reinhardt related stuff which is primarily what they are associated with. I've never seen either live but they do play in Holland/Belgium/France quite regularly. This is a pretty intense rendition of Chick Corea's "Spain".

Birelli and stoch are great but thats a rubbsih version of spain

here are some real masters! (again birellie is great) but john and paco are the pinnacle...Paco possibly being the greatest guitarist across all genres, a ridiculous thing to judge but paco is...unspeakably amazing...as for mclaughlin his knowledge of harmony and scales is unreal and he may the greatest picker in the guitar world! now watch this

Well everyone has their own as opinions and I've tried to warm to Paco de Lucia but as brilliant as he is techincally it doesnt quite hit the right spot for me. Great rendition though I'd prefer someone like Carlos Montoya if I'm getting appreciative of the more Spanish/Latin type style. I find it hard to believe someone who even is aware of that song would consider the Rosenberg/Lagrene version to be rubbish.

well here's what i don't like about the birelli stoch version

intro outros and mid section (main theme) is messy but thats forgiveable maybe they didn't rehearse it much, but the solos are bland (apart from one nice diminished bit by birelli but he uses too much) he just moves a bunch of shapes around tbh..I mean compare to what mclaughlin plays over it, mclaughlin is light years ahead! his outside playing is immense, and the sections he plays in free time wow! and then he throws some mangled half whole scale over a group of chords and it works really well!
but paco s vibe on spain during his solo is awesome you should the transcription, impossible to recreate..I grew up on a diet on gypsey jazz but so often they don't translate across to straight ahead stuff..with a few exceptions, django, birelli maybe, have you heard birelli with sylvan luc ..duet I tihnk it's called amazing album.

I haven't heard Duet but I'll go looking for that later - thanks. Good analysis though...the 'theme' pieces are a bit flakey and Birelli does over do it with the improvisation. Some of the Paco/McLauchlin playing is technically outstanding. I wouldn't have a hope of recreating either version to be honest. I grew up mostly consuming much heavier rock music and blues. It is probably too late for me to rewire my circuits playing wise.
