entry level SLR

    Hi all

I am thinking of buying a Digital SLR, since I wish to start taking photography more seriously. At the moment I have a compact one, however I wish to make the step to an SLR.

I read some posts here, and lots of cameras were mentioned. However I do not know which one is the best for my purposes. I like to take photos of scenery and outdoors mainly.

My budget would be something between €500-600, however, I can increase it a bit if it is worth to.

Can you guys recommend something that is like an entry level, but can be "upgraded" to more professional standards in the future.

    Thanks for all your help

    Johann

The Canon 1000D or 450D would be the bottom end of the Canon range. Both very good for what you want.

The lenses you would buy for these would also be used on future newer models, or even stepping up to their more professional bodies.

    Well worth considering.

Aside from that, you might be better off going to a camera store, and having a physical look and feel of the cameras, before you even decide to buy.

Any links to good shops in the Dublin area (especially city centre). Would like to see the price range also.

    Thanks

Buy online, much cheaper, but still safe. Try some ebay shops like digital rev, kea photo and others. Or even try jessops.co.uk, even though i had problems with their service, others find them quite good, and you can get some good bargains. Also have a look on 7dayshop.com.

One more thing is to remember that your budget needs to include a bag and compact flash memory card at the least (could be as much as €50-100 depending), and also maybe a tripod, extra lenses, filters and so on.

    Hope this helps

Try Gunn's on Wexford St. A very good place to have a look since they'll give you great advice. They don't have a website.

As for others, Conns are online, but very expensive. If you want to buy, then I'd recommend buying online. Try places in the UK for better deals.

So you guys think its safe to order online?

    And what about amazon?

    Saw this link

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-Digital-Camera-18-55mm-3-5-5-6/dp/B00131Z6YA/ref=sr_1_24?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1217249965&sr=1-24

Seems like a reasonable enough price

Amazon won't ship electronics to Ireland.

Calumet in Belfast (google) are very good and brilliant prices right now.

I think the vast majority of users on here order online rather than buying in a store in Dublin.

Don't worry about buying online. If its first time, then you might be worried as you hear a lot of scare stories about people getting ripped off, but there are a tonne of reputable companies you can deal with, some of which are mentioned already.

guys, there is an argos store down the road.

Is it ok to buy from there?

Some links for you to look at.

    Jessops , Digital Rev, Calumet

If your looking for a bag, memory card etc have a look around the forum for deals (either the photography forum or bargains alerts forum - bargains always popping up).

Looking for additional lenses have a look on adverts.ie for second hand lenses, or on ebay (kea or digital rev)

You could, but they're very expensive, for cameras anyway. The stuff I bought recently from Jessops would have been about €400 dearer from there!! http://www.jessops.com/Store/s74764/1-136-481/Home/Cameras--and--Lenses/Digital-SLRs/Canon/EOS-450D-Twin-Lens-Bundle/details.aspx

thanks a lot guys for this excellent information.

I must admit the Canon 450D looks really good for what I am looking for. Will also search some other cameras in my budget and will post here for advice, or search through the forums.

Komplett.ie are cheaper than pixmania.com, and id also say more reliable.

Jessops would be cheaper than both, or online the best prices... look around.

    ^^^ what daycent said.

Nothing wrong with buying from Argos, but you'll save a tonne by buying online, espcially with the current exchange rate.

Hey guys, the best deals seems to be at komplett.ie or kea-photo. Has anyone ever bought from kea-photo? Seems like a very good deal

    Thanks again

Actually Jessops is cheaper than komplett at €646 (incl. delivery) as apposed to komplett which is €660 (incl. delivery). Not much in it, but half way to a memory card, very close to a tripod, or a few filters... Only negative is that jessops will take longer to ship and order has to be done over the phone.

Kea-photo is €627, so it is cheaper, and kea are good, but cant get the cashback or whatever offer canon have on at the moment when u order from outside Europe...

Just checked 7dayshop and found it there for just over €600 , looks like the best deal to me

kea is 420 + 45 so its £465 in total, so cheaper than 7 dayshop.com. 7dayshop.com is £472 + shipping, so that makes it more expensive.

Just wanted to know if Kea is trustable

Kea-photo are totally reliable. I've bought from them in the past.
