Ferry from Ireland to Scotland

We are interested in driving around Scotland in the next few weeks are are trying to weigh up our options.
We are trying to decide whether to fly to one of the bigger cities and hire a car for a week - or else take a car-ferry over. Is there any ferry service direct from Ireland to Scotland? Would love to hear from anyone who has done this before.
    Thanks.

I guess you'll have to do some of the work yourself I'm afraid :)

Get the best price for a 1 week car rental and compare this to the price of a ferry (Stena Line) to see which is the better financial offer.

Other members can inform you on the benefits of taking your own car as opposed to renting.

Stena run a ferry from Belfast to Stranraer. I've never done it, but a friend has and she thought it was a great way to travel. A lot quicker than going Dublin Holyhead and driving up to scotland.

there's also P&O who go from Larne to a couple of destinations. www.POirishsea.com

I lived in Edinburgh for the summer a few years back and myself and the then boyfriend took his car over on the Belfast - Stranraer ferry. Very handy and its a nice crossing. The one we got didnt get into Stranraer until around 11pm so I got a B&B through the Stranraer tourist office. Its a lovely drive up the coast towards Glasgow. Its a fabulous country, so take the car and enjoy :)

You have a few choices with ferries:
Larne to Troon (I think there's a fast ferry on this route)
    Belfast to Stranraer
Dublin to Liverpool (does this still operate?)
    Dublin to Holyhead
    Dun Laoghaire to Holyhead

Holyhead to Glasgow is doable in about 5 hours but you could take in a day or two in the Lake District if you wanted to break the journey.

The direct driving route is probably via one of the northern ports.

Ryanair fly into Edinburgh and Prestwick and car hire with Hertz is usally fairly reasonable so you need to start doing some costings - take into account the weight restrictions and cost of ectra bags if flying.

Where you live in Ireland will affect whether you go Dublin-Holyhead or Belfast Stranraer.

P&O sail from Dublin port to Liverpool. If you are in Dublin then this route might be as good as driving to Larne.

i would recomend you sail from NI. From dublin, you make belfast in 2 hours.
The sailings are quite regular from both belfast and larne.
belfast-stranraer (stena). The road from stranraer to ayr is pretty poor (about 1.5 hrs with the towns and roadworks you pass at present, the scenary isnt that good- (poor relative to the scotland highlands).
larne (p&o) is about 20 miles from belfast. the sea crossing there is to troon. Outside rush hour times, you can drive troon-edinburugh in 1.5hrs (35mins to glasgow).
