Anyway watched this tonight and for me it's the best movie i've seen all year.

Val Kilmar is simply amazing in it. Anyone else seen it.

Hoping to watch it this week.

I've got about 5 films to get through, not counting cinema releases.

From what I've read, it is supposed to be really good.

Have the DVD preordered. I'm a big Val Kilmer fan but have a thing about Stephen Dorf, I just want to punch him every time I see him.

    Very gritty and realistic.
    Kilmer and Dorff were outstanding.

Some people are comparing it favourably to The Shawshank Redemption and saying that Felon is the second best film ever set in a prison.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,651 ✭✭✭Spunog UIE

yeah I meant to post this, excellant film. There are somethings like Shawshank Redemption but they are two very different films.

Just watched it after seeing this thread. Absolutely fantastic. Really gritty. Both Dorf & Kilmer put in excellent performances.

God damn all this positive feedback is making me question whether I should wait for the DVD or get my hands on it from other sources.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,216 ✭✭✭Kur4mA

Agreed on this one. I was really suprised by this as I wasn't expect much of it tbh. Both characters are very well played especially Kilmer's. He puts in an outstanding performance.
When he was telling the story of the murders he committed which caused him to get his original prison sentence it really was chilling and had the hairs on the back of my neck standing.

Also, the whole prison setting is completely believable.

Sounds interesting, must check it out

after reading this thread i had to check this out, and its really good flick, very gritty and great acting from kilmer and dorff

personally don'tthink its an oscar level performance but he didn't put a foot wrong

Loved this film too. Dorf and Kilmer were excellent (and Kilmer's character actually looked like a guy you'd cross the street to avoid).

Nobody has mentioned Harold Perrineau, who played one of the wardens. The difference in his character inside and outside the prison was very well realised, almost schizophrenic.

    Really recommend this film....

I 'obtained' this movie during the week. I hadnt heard much about it but after reading the posts here I reckon a night in with pizza, beers and this movie is called for.

Seriously considering cancelling my DVD and instead ordering the Blu Ray after all the positive things I've heard about Felon.

Hadn't heard anything about this film until I read all the good comments here.
Just watched it, and you're right it's a crackin film. Kilmer, Dorff and 'Michael' were all great.

Doesn't a film have to be released in at least 1 L.A. cinema on or after the 01/01/whatever year to be qualified for the oscars?[correct me if I'm wrong btw, not exactly sure but I think thats the general gist of the situation]? Did this get such a release? Also, has a direct to dvd movie ever even won any oscars?

Watched it during the week, like a few others have said its a proper prison film.I am a big fan of Oz and was shocked how good this was.

Is it coming to the Cinema?

Its self and the Mist and have been the films of the year for me.

Am halfway through it.. tis very good alright!

But one thing has really been bothering me.. does anyone else notice how much Val Kilmer's character looks like Gordon Freeman from the 'Half Life' games?

    Haha good shout basquille.

Just finished watching this. Very good movie, Id definitely recommend it.

I don't know.. I enjoyed it but wasn't in all very predictable?!

I mean I kept waiting for some twist, or shock but it really all ended exactly how I expected it to.
Smith being killed, Porter being released, Lt Jackson getting his comeuppance and Collins facing up to his fellow guards

I'd say was a good film with excellent performances (Dorff, Kilmer and Perrineau were all fantastic).

Any comparison to The Shawshank Redemption should be completely stricten... it's like people who tried to compare 'Prison Break' to 'Oz'... i'm afraid it's absolutely incomparible other than the surroundings.

First thing I thought was Gordon Freeman as well :)

Kinda underwhelmed, I think the love story tangents could have been done better, and I've always found Dorf to be annoying, but a welcome transformation from Kilmer.

Kilmer is a very underrated actor. In recent years he's turned in a number of excellent performences. The Salton Sea and the truly fanastic Wonderland find him at his finest and are highly recommended.

Kilmer does seem to be taking what good roles he can over the past few years- seemingly in an attempt to jump start his career and tbh I hope this is the first of many good roles for him. The Salton Sea is one of my favourite films ever!

Awesome a fellow fan of The Salton Sea. Kilmer is one of those actors whom I will watch in anything and while he has been in some garbage he usually does turn in a decent performence. He was exceptional in Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang and is fantastic in the mini series Comanche Moon. I think I might go watch Blind Horizion now, been sitting on my shelf for the past few weeks.

To paraphrase Eamon Dunphy, it was a good film, it wasnt a great film. Kilmar however was outstanding. And Hot Chick from Season 6 of 24 got her breasts out. So 8/10 overall.

Featuring Stephen Dorff as Padraig Nally and some mexican as 'The tinker'.
Good film alright, well worth the bandwidth

would liked to have seen the micahel break out of prison like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,404 ✭✭✭qwertplaywert

Good film, certainly worth a watch. I found Dorff as annoying as usual, and Kilmer brilliant as usual.
