You can buy an optical slave hotshoe connection from Calumet in Belfast or on the net that you can fire with the built in flash on the 40d. The 580exII also has a pc synch that you can connect up but will be easier to use the Canon external cable as it keeps ETTL

yeah the setup i want is to keep the 580EXII on my 40d, ruun a long distance cable (2 meters or so) from the pc sync connector on the camera to the cheap flash (320AFC)

Optical slave hotshoe is your man then. Only seen them last week, probably have to order them in to get them in Dublin.

I have a 15 metre pc sync cable that i can use in this fashion with a vivitar flash and still use my canon 430EX on my 30D (I think I got the cable in B&H for about $10)

thats exactley it, does the cable have any boxes or components along it or does it just pretty much look like a straight cable

I can't find this in my order history, but it was something like this. You'll also need a hotshoe adaptor

doh! just checked in my bag and it's actually a male to female cord you want, not male to male
