attually the best free program is windows movie maker... you should have it if you have XP

really depends on the level you want to go to, but windows movie maker as suggest is a good one to start with, also if you do some digging on google you'll be able to get extra filters for it.

VirtualDub without doubt. It will only open AVI & MPEG1 files though but you can get around that with say Avisynth

Download them using www.downloadyoutubevideos.com.

Rename the downloaded file with a .flv extension.

Encode the .flv to .wmv using SUPER Converter.

Then you can open it in Windows Movie Maker.
