    Hi all,
I'm living in the Mayo area and have NTL in the house. I think its terrible. Everything keeps freezing on the screen and it just turns off by it's self. I have made 4 service calls to them and they havn't turned up. I'm thinking of trying this whole freeview thing and was wondering if anyone has any opinions of this. I'm looking for some info aswell like what channals can you get on it and what's the reception like in Mayo.

    try looking at www.freesat.co.uk
    It's from a satelite.

Freeview is the uk system where tv is recieved with your tv aerial. The irish system isn't fully set up yet.

For more info on freesat, try the satelite forum.

Must be MMDS you have at the moment? Digital Terrestrial Televsion (DTT) for Mayo (what part are you in?) isn't due until the end of 2010. This will be available through a TV aerial.

As pa990 says Freesat is available if you dont want to pay (i.e. Sky) for satellite TV. Its a way of getting the main UK channels for free.

More info on MMDS etc in the Cable & MMDS forum here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=54

And Irish DTT is not likely anytime soon in the wilds of Mayo. A Dish is your only hope.
Free has all the good UK channels.
Subscription is needed for Irish TV and Sky/Disney/Discovery etc, plus the free channels.

Correction there..Irish TV excluding TV3 will be available by end of 2008 according to the Irish Post on Freesat UK and perhaps Freesat from Sky also. But it won't feature foreign programming. Subscription will not be needed for it. see: http://www.irishpost.co.uk/news/story/?trs=qlkfidid and http://www.irishpost.co.uk/news/story/?trs=qlojidoj&cat=news which mentions end of 2008

I use the free sat thing in West Mayo. I bought the cheap package from Lidl, but had to change to a standard Sky mesh dish. The Lidl dish wasn't up to the windy conditions out here. But it works fine now. You get BBC1,2,3,4 ITV1,2,3,4 & Sky News, plus some other miscellaneous rubbish. I think I would recommend buying the dish and box together from a specialist satellite supplier. They will be able to tell you how to install it, or will do it themselves either.

RTE on freesat will RTE international.

Only the main sites are getting done this year. Unless you get good analogue signal today from Truskmore, Longford (Carn Hill) or Maghera in the part of Mayo, I can't see what you would receive DTT from.

RTE International on Freesat = RTE UK. Nothing like a complete Irish TV service.

Well, it will have all the Irish programmes and the foreign ones can be watched on the UK channels, albeit slightly later...I think it'll make Sky subscription even less of a must when word is out. I wonder about TV3's programmes though. They should agree, even if no adverts to, and in time then move these to their own UK part time channel.
