Heading to Madrid in the new year (end of January) for a weekend, looking for info on the best places to stay, good areas/good hotels. Budget would be around €100 a night but I'd like to pay less obviously! Any advice would be appreciated.

I don't know any good hotels but take an open air bus tour guide early in your stay to get oriented, you can hop on and off. also many diferrent routes but some stay around center city and don't take too long.

That sounds like a pretty good idea, cheers.

Stayed here a couple of years ago - www.hostalpersal.com . It was clean, good value for money and in a great location. Rooms are small though. Get rooms at the back because noise from the nearby Plaza Santa Ana can get loud at night. Plaza Santa Ana and Huertas are on your doorstep and have great bars that stay open late.

Madrid is a great city to visit but pickpockets are everywhere so keep an eye on your belongings. If you're on a budget, many museums - including the fantastic Prado Gallery - are free on a Sunday (get there early because they get mobbed).

This is where we stayed a couple of years ago: http://www.atprincipe11.com/
We got a large studio apartment, fairly well equipped, very central location, but with possibility of noise due to a bar just across the largely pedestrianised street -- so ask for a room at the back if you are interested. It should come within your budget.
