Ok first and foremost I am thought to be crazy by some so I do realize that I must be crazy to want to do this.I am also broke an like a challenge
I have a Dell laptop that overheats more than a polar bear in mexico and I don't really use it's portablility so much anymore so I'm wondering if i could transfer the components to a desktop tower I have lying around.
    Its a Dell Inspiron 1501
AMD Turion 64x2 Mobile with ATI Xpress 1150 Shared GFX
    1GB ram
120gb hdd and eh..other components that don't really matter unless you want to know.

Let me stress I am broke and am still in school so buying a desktop is NOT viable.

Anyone who can help me I realy appreciate it as I understand this is not something that everybody will have experience or knowledge in.
    Thanks in advance

    Short answer: No

    Long answer: Hell No

Prop up the laptop on something to allow better airflow

as last poster said hell no, but are you actually just thinking of mounting all the laptop components in a desktop case for better cooling? many issues i could see with this but as you say money is an issue so i think this is an idea you should forget.

Is your laptop overheating to a point of it switching it self off etc or is it just running hot ? Might be worth clearing the dust etc from the vents and fans, and as last poster suggested proping it up to improve airflow, this is what I do and isnt an issue for me as I use a seperate mouse and keyboard.

Are you running the laptop with an external monitor and leaving it closed durring operation?

I have it propped up.My mam has a similar Dell laptop which I don't recall ever getting hot.
This is a replacement of the exact same model I have now , only with 1gb ram instead of 512. The old one used to overheat then show the blue screen of death.

I haven't got it hooked up to an external monitor but might leave it downloading overnight with the monitor closed.I assume that your asking this because having it closed does increase the temp which i have noticed. Also running the laptop for several hours doesn't help either.

I will get a laptop cooler eventually by the looks of things
    :confused::mad::(:mad:

theres no real way to do that. Really your best option is mount some cooling on it.

I find laptop cooling pads pretty much suck though. Really you need to blow air across the bottom of the laptop; not straight into/out of it.

i dont know why everyone is saying this cannot be done.

all that i would involve would be to take the casing off the laptop and put in in a tower securely and add some appropriate cooling.

it would not be the most neat and beautiful looking but it would be done.

it would oviously not be setup like normal desktop.

Has it always been like this? Have you ever cleaned inside the laptop?

All your problems might be solved by just opening it and clearing the layer of dust from inside. It won't be producing any more heat now than when you first got it, cooling would of just decreased.

As people have mentioned to you twice already, clean the inside of the laptop and get rid of all the dust, dust bunnies, cigarette ash, hair whatever......

    No really......

More often than not it will resolve the issue, hell if you really feel like it remove the cpu cooler and fit some arctic silver 5 or equivelant TIM.

My mates missues had a latop that was cutting out, dismantled it, cleaned it, put on some arctic silver 5: epic win. No more cutting out.

Def try to clean it before going off and trying something else.
