Changing Eircom Netopia to a better Router

Hi Lads, I was using Netgear DG834G Instead of Netopia 3347NWG on 3MB and was doing fine for years ,When Malahide got upgraded last week to 7.6MB it failed to sync above 2.6MB so I changed back to Netopia and my line stats now are

    DSL Statistics

    Line State :Up
    Modulation: DMT
    Data Path: Interleave

    Downstream Upstream

Max Allowed Speed (kbps) 6144 512

    SN Margin (dB) 8.50 12.00

    Line Attenuation (dB) 40.50 27.00

    CRC Errors 36 5

the SN fluctuates between 8 to 11 so I was thinking this is not stable and maybe I'm not getting the full speed because of the Netopia so any advise on buying ADSL2+ Modem/Router to help improve my Sync and speed

I'm due to be upgraded from 2Mb to 3Mb on 11 August. I had a netopia 2247. My best SNR with it was 12 to 14db. However it was very unstable - literally all over the place in the late evening and night. Recently got a Thomson SpeedTouch 858v7. No imrovement in absolute SNR - still 14dB but now SNR only fluctuates 0.5 to 1dB over 24 hrs - very stable. Do a google on Speedtouch 858 and SNR and you'll see that a lot of people have used them to solve unstable SNR problems. It uses a broadcom chip set. Another router mentioned was the Netgear DG834GT - again I believe this particular Netgear model uses broadcom chips.

Would you be on a cable run with lots of BB subscribers and with some of these subscribers 2 miles + from the exchange ZV ???

Did the Netopia run very hot in the eves ??

OP: That speed is odd. Your line is connecting at the speed of the eircom business 6mb/512kb package (on non ADSL2+ exchanges)

There is a chance that the engineers saw the attenuation of your line and put you on the specs of the business ultra package.

Anyway, you're getting a pretty good speed for your attenuation so I don't see much room for improvement.

Have you tried unplugging everything (including filters) except the modem itself to see if that makes any difference??

3000M from rural exchange with 39dB attenuation and all underground cable from what I can see. My guess is that most people around here who can get BB have it. The 2247 got warm but not hot, but then again so does the Speedtouch. My impression is that the 2247 seems to have difficulty negotiating a steady SNR (with the DSLAM??) if it gets upset. If the line is stable everything is fine but if there’s a bit of random line noise the 2247 seems to over compensate either too high or too low - always hunting for stability but never getting there. Eventually the swings become so big that the SNR hits zero and then it resyncs. Everything is Ok again then for a while until the next upset and then the cycle repeats.
The Speedtouch is very stable 13-14dB all the time. I left it going all night the first night under test with routerstats but generally turn it off at night now.

PS: For anyone wanting to sample their line stats over few hours have look at routerstats - http://www.vwlowen.co.uk/internet/files.htm - works with netopia 2247

The honest answer to that is I don't know:confused: !! I use BB for tele-working (citrix) and 2Mbits is more than enough for that. My main problem was stability and all I can say is that I've seen a vast improvement since switching to the Speedtouch.

you maybe right as i was on the 3MB Business Starter package originally and was hoping to be upgraded to ADSL2+ like the rest of Business packages as i understand they are starting with Business lines prior to residential. so it could be the case i guess i can do nothing about it then!
