UK Vs Irish Laws

When I came to live here, I contacted the social services back in the UK and told them what had happened. They gave me details of Banardos who would give me councelling before I was allowed to trace my birthmother. I have had enough bloody councelling to last me a lifetime, maybe because I am still a UK citizen I am covered by UK laws, but I wish I didn't have to go and tell someone everything that I have told numerous councellors already.

Is there any way I can bypass the drackonion laws of the UK, (which I believed had been changed to make it easier for people to contact adoptive relatives?) and just find any records of my adoption?

I don't really understand your question?

Were you adopted here or the uk?
Do you know any info at all?

I would presume UK laws as it is under their jurisdiction.
There are other ways to trace with out their help that you could start by yourself.

    Hi,

I would agree with Moonbeams response in that as the adoption was UK based you'll be subject to their requirements. I'm definitely not an expert in the UK position but I thought that anyone who had reached the age of 18 (might be 21) was entitled to their adoption file in the UK provided they met with a social worker/counsellor (I don't think there was a minimum number of times that you had to go - the meeting a which you get your file would suffice i think). Now that you are in Ireland they may well allow you to use an Irish agency like Barnardos to fulfil the meeting requirement.

I think you should contact the UK again and ask them to clarify the requirements. If it is a one meeting rule to get the file in the UK but could be more protracted here it might be worth making the trip over to at least get your file.

Wishing you the best of luck.

    Martin
