Airline Schedule & Routing Changes

I booked some flights in America for over Christmas/New Years back in March and I've just been informed that because of the scaling back of routes and schedules, I'm being rerouted all over the country (usually via Dallas) with stupidly long layovers and I'm wondering what my options are with the airline (AA). I've spent ages discussing with them what a 'reasonable' schedule change is and in their mind so long as they get me from A to B then that's ok, no matter if it's via X, Y and Z.

I haven't booked my flights to the US yet and I'm considering just asking if I can cancel the whole thing altogether as the connections that should have taken a couple of hours are going to end up seriously eating into my holiday time. Has anyone had any experience of this and it is grounds for cancellation (and hopefully!) a refund?

Refunds will probably be based on the airline, the type of ticket you purchased and your travel insurance (if you have any).

Is it possible to check their website and find a better route to follow and ask them to chenge it?
