Is it me or are the pings about 40ms higher than normal, Even pinging boards has doubled since the upgrade. This is shocking.

Based on the other two threads about the Eircom upgrades, it seems that Eircom have set the Interleaving to high for everyone upgrading to the 7.6Mb package. They said that they would adjust it down after the upgrades were finished.

If they don't then they'll have a lot of people downgrading. A higher ping will make web browsing feel slower even if the transfer rate is higher so some users might feel like things have gotten worse. I'd say they're erring on the side of caution while getting things up and running.

Though if they used ADSL2+ for the 7.6 package they wouldn't be having this problem because the system would be well capable of it. Typical eircom.

myself and 3 other mates are downgrading once the 7.6meg package kicks in our exchange, thats at least 70 euro a month in lost revenue to Eircom alone from the 4 of us, but we'll give the 7.6meg package a weeks trial first and if pings are still high then we'll all downgrade.

You do realise you'll be going from a 24:1 to a 48:1 contention ratio by downgrading from the highest package.

Not of very much concern to gamers and judging by his signature he is one. Ping is king in games and if Eircom's 7.6mbit high ping continues you will see a lot of gamers getting downgraded.

It's a catch 22 though. higher contention packages experience slow down and latency. Current 3 meg package is 24:1 and download speed is good all the time as is latency.

the 1 and 2 meg packages experience contention and latency can be all over the gaff.

Moving from 7.6 back to 3 will probably cause more hassel than it's worth. I see bad times ahead for gamers.

Gonzo is on the same exchange as me and from the speedtest results we both post there does not seem to be a contention problem where we live as we always get the max speeds (even in evening peak time), im on the 2mb pckage and he's on the 3mb.

being a gamer i can tell you i would prefer a 512 connection and low ping times as to 20 MB connection and high ping times

Shouldn't really have any issues with ping on the lower package unless there is something a miss on Eircoms side and if this was the case you would be just as likely to get rubbish pings on the more expensive connection. I'm on a 3mbit now (formally 2) and get rock solid low pings always no matter what time of the day or night.

thats good to hear, basically im moving from a 48.50 euro a month package with rubbish pings, 24:1 ratio and 30gig download to a 29.99 package with excellent pings, 48:1 ratio and the only real downside is the smaller download limit of 20gigs.

However I've a feeling that Eircom might change or at least offer the option to change the interleving coz I imagine that alot of their current 3meg about to be 7.6meg subscribers are not the casual home/family/internet user but is made up of hardcore gamers and heavy downloaders. I wont be around for nearly 2 weeks after the upgrade so im hoping there might be a solution by then, if not then i'll defo be downgrading, apart from saving quite alot of money it just seems like the right thing to do if your into gaming.
