I did it a few years ago. Are you on the course now, what do you think of it?

I'm hoping to be on it starting September. Did the interview at NUIG on Friday (July 25th). The course prospectus looks ideal for me and I love the look and feel of the college having come from IT Sligo which is not so lovely.

What was your primary degree? If you have studied business before you will find a lot of overlap with the business subjects on the MIT. In general all the subjects\courses are fairly high level and although there is a lot of content its all manageable.

Only advice I would give is to make sure you choose a good topic for your research thesis in year 2.

Hope you get chosen for the course, there are only 12 places so it is not easy to get into it. You wont get a better college than NUIG if you ask me, galway is a great place to be a student!

    Hey there qwytre

Thanks for that great positive post. makes me really feel good about my choice now. My degree at Sligo was in Software Developement. While I am good technically, I don't want to spend the rest of my life writing software, I am a communicator so I decided that it makes sense for me to study computing at a more holistic level.
I think this course is perfect for me . It retains the technical side but also brings in Business, Social, law etc all relating to ICT. I spent a day with the some computing staff at NUIG a few weeks ago, spent some time with some very nice people in there, even attended a lecture at lunchtime. I fell in love with the campus, had a good walk round, the Quardangle, the Library, the IT Building itself, the river etc. Also love the look of the new swimming pool.

The only thing I'm dreading is no funding. No more BTEA, therefore no rent allowance etc. The next two years are going to be very tough.

The course does sound well suited for what you want so and you have done all the right things to find out how happy you would be doing it. If you said all that in the interview I think you have a very good chance of getting it.

Some of the subjects on the course like "Philosphy of Technology", "Physcology", and one other social coruse I cant remember the name of are a bit fluffy and you wont learn much from them but the end goal of getting an Masters in IT degree is what you want.

I thought the MIT was funded by some european fund? It was in my day anyways. How much do you have to pay?

Yea I think the fees are subsidised, they currently stand at around €1700. I may qualify for a grant from my County Council which would pay that. But as a postgrad student I no longer qualify for back to Education allowance and thus no rent allowance. So I have to find a job and beg from family members. How did you survive the two years financially ?

Ah right I see now. I was lucky enough to have received a fellowship from NUIG which gave me 4k (irish pounds back in the day!) for the first year. And my parents funded the rest. And there is 6 months paid company placement in year 2 as well. I also got some money (not much) in year 2 for supervising exams. There is a project you have to do during the summer months but you will have time there to work if you want.

If I was you I would avoid getting a job during the semesters, either borrow or get a loan. You want to come out with at least an honours degree and you will be earning a good salary in few years time. You will need time to study for that.

If you do get a job try to keep the hours you spend on it down. The hours you spend studying will be worth much more to you over the long term than the 10 euro ph or whatever you will get for by working somewhere.

    Hi there....
I'm starting MIT on Sept 8th, have not gone to check out NUIG yet though, just finished a BSc hons in Computer Services Management at GMIT. Does anyone know if we can pick our work placement positions or are they chosen by NUIG?

Hey Mayo, nice to meet you. Dont know the answer to this question, I'm sure we'll get a say but may have to accept what comes round particularly in the current downturn.

See you on the 8th and best of luck to you

    Kieran

It is not really fully written in stone. In some cases employers will come to the college and interview everyone individually and choose who they want.

In other cases placements will be chosen for you. But of course you are free to tell the course supervisor what you would like, if you would like to work in Dublin or stay in Galway etc.

And there is nothing stopping you identifying a company you would like to work for and asking the supervisor about it and maybe approach the company etc. Make things happen for yourself.

One word of advice is that your work placement really forms the basis for your thesis submission at the end of year 2. You would normally use the company as a case study etc.

So, make sure you are doing what you like in the work placement, if you like databases make sure you get a placement with that kind of work.

    Hi qwytre

Do you mind me asking - Where did you end up on your placement ? What were your interests and what did you do your thesis on?

No worries if you want to keep this info private

Ended up in dublin in AIB which was the biggest waste of time, but the 6 months in Dublin with 2 other guys from the course was great. I was doing a bit of work on the AIB intranet but mostly had nothing to do. My thesis was abot intranets too.
