Hi there I have only started in a new job there 2months ago.I hate it.Anyway I was taken aside the other day and told I had to take a pay cut as i wasnt performing to there standards of what they hired me to do. I am really pissed off with this as I have not got no extra training so how could I this job. I left my old job after being in it for 8 yrs as they promised me the sun moon and stars.I have till Monday to give them an answer. So question 1 Do they just want to get rid of me? Question 2 What if I refuse a pay cut. I did sign a contract but I don't want to work somewhere that I'm not wanted. This is all very distressing any help would be appreciated.

You hate the job so leave it.

    Seems fairly cut and dry.

Thanks for that but I have bills to pay and have to pay for a roof over my head, how crap it will look on my CV,that I last 2months.

Refuse the pay cut, explain that they haven't given you any training but you have been doing your best anyhow - don't admit to not meeting targets unless they are clearly defined and you have no comeback.
Start sending out CV's, life's too short to be in a job you hate.

Secure another job first .... then leave. You already have an 8 year track record behind you. These people are a**holes.

Depends how you put it, just say it wasn't the role you were expecting.

Once in your new job you can massage the time frames on your cv for the next one..a month here or there wont be noticed imho.

They're just a bunch of tossers - if you can't do the job right then it's the person who hired you who should take a pay cut.

What does your contract say about the possibility of pay cuts?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 569 ✭✭✭texas star

Thanks for the help.It says nothing about paycuts in the contract.I think they are panicing as the person ahead of me is going on leave for the next year and they dont have anyone to replace her.I think they thought I could do her job in 2 months while she has been there 6yrs.I told them I wouldnt be able to do her job and they said fine a few weeks ago(thought honesty was the best policy) now they are moving the goal post on me.Its horrible feeling. Im think if I go in on Monday and say no to a paycut then they will say well no job so that will be that.I have never been sacked in my life I feel physically sick thinking about it.:(

Sounds bad for both you and your employer.

They feel the person they hired is not who they thought they were hiring, and you feel you're not being given enough support to do the job.

All you can do is plead your case and then take the pay cut...

If they thought you were useless they'd just ask you to leave, so you must be doing something right.

Personally I would take the pay cut and then desperately look for a new job.

Sounds like losing your job would be feel like a personal failure. That's fully understandable but you shoudn't look at it like that. If the job is horrible and you are getting treated badly with regards to the paycut then there's no shame in walking away.

Do what makes you happy and don't worry about drawing the dole for a few months if needs be :)

Did you read any of the previous posts? The OP can't just walk, he/she has bills to pay, roof over head etc..

Would I be right in saying that if you've signed a contract you can't be unfairly fired? If you were not trained on the job you are currently doing, its not all your fault that you cannot do what is fully required of you. If they wanted you out, wouldn't they just have to make you redundant (and pay you to get out) or wait till your contract runs out? Couldn't you take them to court otherwise?
If your boss had worked things right, s/he could've made sure you worked with the woman ahead of you, or trained you in properly. Its not your fault that they didn't, so you shouldn't have to suffer. What a bunch of a-holes.

No, that's incorrect. During the probationary period it's very easy to get let go. Once the probationary period is specified in the contract, and not more than a year, then the Unfair Dismissals act doesn't apply.

Maybe the OP is just very good at interviews. I hate to be negative, but isn't there the possibility that maybe the OP isn't as good as s/he made him or herself out to be? Maybe this is not the case at all, but it's not always the employer's fault.

I would have recommended trying to address the root of the issue with the boss, but as it sounds like the OP doesn't like the place at all, then I would say just get a different job.

A bit of advice, check your spelling and use a reasonable bit of grammer. I hate to seem picky but it looks really unprofessional, if your professional emails, letters, manner etc match your posts here then there's a bit of room for improvement. I'm just guessing but txt speak etc tends to be a habit.

Agreed that if it isn't working out then leave, I don't know what line of work you are in but it sounds like sales(seeing as they normally go mad over targets) then there are usually lots of jobs in this with a high turnover so I wouldn't worry too much about the 2 month gap in your cv.

As you said yourself honesty is the best policy so if it's brought up in an interview just tell them it wasn't working out and you thought it best to move on.

Before you criticise someone's "grammar" you should probably check the spelling on the word yourself....

Fair enough but using 4 full stops where one would do? You're sorta missing the point anyway.

Hey well I can do the job I just have been thrown in at the deep end.Anyway they brought me in yesterday and I said I wouldn't take paycut, which went down like a lead balloon. They told me to go away and think about it again and that I should take it,that I had bills and a house and car to pay for.I didn't like them saying that.So had a sleepless nite and another meeting this morning and Im leaving on Friday.I feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders. Now I have to start looking for a job. Thanks for all the help everyone that was pretty dark place last week. Not anymore ;)
    Anyone looking for staff :D

It seems as if they are trying to "constructively dismiss" you (i.e. making conditions so bad that you will leave yourself and thereby avoid sacking you). They would be legally within their rights to dismiss you anyway so it's confusing.

Unfortunately, as you are there less than 365 days, there isn't much you can do about it as the Unfair Dismissals Act won't apply.

Good news. You'll have learned from this and it'll help down the road in future jobs.
