Mobile VOIP

    Hi,

    (first post - hello world!)

I'm looking into getting "mobile VoIP" set up. My plan is to upgrade my handset to something with 3G and WiFi and use Fring or similar to manage Skype and SIP connections. The main aim is to talk to ppl in the UK for less.

I've got a couple of questions which I was hoping someone could help with:
    - Is there a better way of doing this?
    - Would the call quality be any good using the phone's 3G connection?
    - Do the operators (o2 in my case) allow voice traffic over the data connection?
    - Any handset recommendations? (I was thinking the e51).

    Thanks in advance.

You could get a Blueface phone number and then use this with a 3pay 1gb €9.99 per month price plan to make calls. Blueface prepay is €5 and you can call for everything. You get a 076 non-geographical number, or you can go on to the monthly price plans starting at €9.99 and get a regional number.

3g voice quality is so and so. Seeing that I usually get around 1.5 mbps down and about 10-20 kbps up, it would not be totally clear all the time, so you would be better on using wifi if you can.

I have the e51, it has hsdpa which theoretically means 3.6 mbps but havent gotten that ever.

I think o2 wouldnt mind about using mobile voip.

I'm using the sip client on my N82.
Works great when using wifi, I haven't used it over the network itself (O2) as I don't want to pay the data charges.

I've a blueface account already. I got rid of eircom at home about 18 months ago, so I use the same account obviously.
The only problem I've run into was when I wanted to use it on my home wifi connection, I had to knock off my ATA (which handles my home phones). I did find a solution on the blueface forums but haven't got a chance to set it up yet.

I'll never need to use it at home anyway, its more for when I'm away I can ring for free when using others wifi networks.

Anybody have a phoneline sip access point set up?

i.e. When you are at home you can route your home (non voip) phone calls to your phone, saves you carrying around the housephone and mobile.

    Any experiences?

i use the e51's SIP client but it doesn't work well on 3G at all. maybe it works better on other networks beside 3 but there is huge amounts of lag. on wifi it works great

Thanks for the pointers - very helpful. I reckon I'll pick up the E51 anway.

I've had a Blueface 'landline' for almost a year now and I've found it brilliant, especially since I've family overseas who also have VOIP. I'll probably get rid of the ATA (or more likely find donate it to one of the in-laws) if the WiFi via mobile works acceptably.

be careful though. if you buy the e51 *on* a network they might have removed the VoiP client for revenue-increasing purposes. so check that first

If they have, no big problem. You can debrand the phone using NSS and then install the generic firmware using NSU.

Interesting. NSS, NSU? What are these? I'm guessing the N is Nokia?

Doing some of my own legwork for once, I've discovered NSU is Nokia Software Updater. Couldn't find the other one though...

Still, it's upping my post count!
