Wet room or shower

I am thinking of changing my bathroom and like the idea of a wet room. Has anyone installed one, are you happy with it, how does it compare to a shower cubicle. My house is 60 years old so I don't know if it would be suitable. Any advice anyone ?

If I had my time over again I would have done a wetroom instead of a shower too. Despite getting the tilers and plumbers back on numerous occasions the cursed thing is still leaking out around the cubicle somehow. Plus a wetroom is so clean in comparison...no manky shower doors, or glass to keep smear free. Definitely the wetroom.

Have to agree Oscii, I used one in a hotel on holiday recently and thought it was brilliant, so clean.
I hope my bathroom is suitable. Going to get a couple of people to check it out for me.

It doesn't matter how old your house is ,the bathroom has to be "tanked" and it's flexible. Once thats done ,you just tile over everything and bobs your aunty.

My mother isn't as mobile as she used to be and couldn't actually get into the shower cubicle so we totally made-over her bathroom and put in a wet area, which she actually didn't want at the time but now LOVES! I am building a house at the moment and I'm putting in all wet areas instead of shower cubicles. Definately the way to go in my opinion!!

My mother had one installed as well and found it very easy to access.
Fascinated by 311's description of getting your bathroom 'tanked'. Off to google that one..
    Cheers folks.

What exactly is a wet room? Just the whole floor is wet rather than just a cubicle? Is it lower down so that it doesn't go through to the next room?

Hey sorry that was a bit blunt ,I've not done it myself but what I was referring to was a method of fibreglass coating everything up to the waste. Basically turning the bathroom into a large bath.

Sounds expensive  When I finish my current mission (doing up my Mam's house after filthy tenants) I will get a couple of quotes and see what the story is.

It would seem that if you don't tank, a wet room may not be an option, especially up stairs. We are building at the moment and I wanted wet rooms all round, but builder said that tilers wouldn't stand over work on upstairs ones and couldn't guarantee there would be no leaks as there are so many joins between all the floor tiles. I didn't know about tanking to ask...so might do now! It also might mean that you have an overall step into your bathroom rather than it being level with the floors outside - this may not bother you though.

Calluna , what are ye going to use instead of the wet room? an extra long shower tray type thing?
