Overheating problem: Laptop getting way too hot. Solutions?

I have the Dell Inspiron 1501 and it just gets way too hot to the point where it burns you if you touch it underneath. I was looking at getting a laptop cooler, those trays with the fans in them, on ebay but they varied in price from a €5 to €50, and I have no idea how trustworthy the different brands are.

Besides turning it off and letting it cool down every time it starts to overheat, does anyone know any tricks for keeping the laptop cool? Or any trustworthy laptop coolers?

If you're having all these problems with the one laptop - my reccomendation is get a bleedin' new laptop. :pac:

how old is it? You could either get it fixed under warranty or open it up, and remove what is probably a big dustball collection im sure.

Perhaps one of the fans is clogged with dust? I have a dell 6400, both pretty much the same machines, and it never gets "that" hot. As for cooling fans, i'd say it'd just be Inconvenient if the laptop is sitting in your lap. Check the fan/s first though, somethin ain't right.

Cool, how do I check the fans? How do I take it apart? I've never taken a laptop apart before!
