PRESIDENT LAUNCHES RULES OF THE ROAD WEBSITE

Translations Available in Irish, Russian, Chinese Mandarin and Polish

The President of Ireland, Mary McAleese officially launched the Road Safety Authority’s new Rules of the Road website, www.rulesoftheroad.ie, today, 9th July 2008, at Farmleigh, Phoenix Park. The new website provides an interactive version of the Rules of the Road in English, as well as foreign language translations of the Rules of the Road, catering for non-Irish road-users.

Translations of the Rules of the Road in Irish, Chinese Mandarin, Russian and Polish are available to download from the website, as well as an English language audio version of the rules. In addition, the Road Safety Authority has produced e-booklets of the foreign language translations which are available with the audio version on CD-ROM to meet the needs of those with reading difficulties.

Speaking at the launch today, Noel Brett, Chief Executive, Road Safety Authority said: “Ireland has changed over the past few years, in terms of the increase in people from other countries living in Ireland, the needs of the 21st century customer and the number of people using our roads. In Ireland today, one in ten of the population and one in eight of the workforce are from minority ethnic groups. The Road Safety Authority is committed to providing a service that meets the needs of our community. Today’s launch recognises the new communities that have joined our country and the need to make the Rules of the Road accessible to these communities.”

The Road Safety Authority has been running an ongoing foreign language road safety campaign since March 2006. The objective of the campaign is to provide road safety information to the various non-Irish communities in Ireland. It focuses on the following legal requirements and road safety advice when driving in Ireland:

Licence, tax and insurance
The National Car Test (NCT)
Speed limits
Penalties for breech of speed limits, seatbelt regulations and drink driving laws
The main road safety issues of Speeding, Drink Driving, Seatbelt wearing and the use of child car seats by children


In addition to the foreign language translations of the Rules of the Road, the Road Safety Authority has undertaken extensive activity to ensure non-Irish road-users are catered for in the provision of road safety information. This activity includes the publication of a leaflet, ‘Road Safety and the Law’ in eight foreign languages, an increase in the number of driver theory test centres providing foreign language theory tests and advertising campaigns in the minority ethnic press and websites.

“As a statutory body, the Road Safety Authority has a public duty to provide members of our community for whom English is not their first language with information on road safety and traffic laws in Ireland to assist their participation in Irish society. The launch today of the community translations of the Rules of the Road is another addition to our continuing foreign language road safety campaign,” Mr Brett concluded.

The Rules of the Road website was nominated for an Irish Education eGovernment Award in February. The award recognised the efforts of organisations to use Information and Communications Technology to deliver better and more efficient services and information to internal and external audiences.

The foreign language translations of the Rules of the Road are available at www.rulesoftheroad.ie as well as an interactive English version, edited to Plain English standards by NALA.
