Review of Safety Belts in Buses – Notice to Stakeholders

In January 2008, the Road Safety Authority notified stakeholders of its intention to review the certification requirements in respect of safety belt fitments in buses and that the September 2008 planned introduction of these requirements was being deferred pending the outcome of the review. Following a public tender process, the Road Safety Authority engaged Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) in April 2008 to assist it with the carrying out of the review. That review, which included detailed consultation with stakeholders, is continuing and is expected to be concluded very soon. The Road Safety Authority would like to confirm to stakeholders that the certification requirements will not be introduced from September 2008 and have been deferred until further notice while the review is continuing. Stakeholders will be informed of developments in relation to the outcome of the review and the certification requirements in due course.
