What are some popular songs/pieces that are insightful to study to get a better understanding of how music is put together? Popular pieces that aren't too complex. Start the title referencing :D

Pachelbel's Canon (ok it's classical) is a great and simple piece to study that has 'inspired' popular music like Everytime by Britney Spears and All together now by The Farm and many others.

Bohemian Rhapsody is a good one and also featured on the Leaving Certificate syllabus. It's good because of the different sections, ballad, operatic, rock etc...when broken down the harmonies and chord progressions are also great. Alot of Beatles tunes are also great to look at in terms of chord progressions and melody lines, Eleanor Rigby, Yesterday and Hey Jude are good examples. You could also try looking for some chord sheets to jazz standards such as Autmn Leaves, Summertime, All the things you are etc...if you do an image search in google you should find some chord sheets for the Jazz stuff!

Radiohead tunes like Paranoid Android, How to Disappear Completely and the Pyramid Song to name a few are also examples of great composition and orchestrations...

Hope this helps, if you can't get chords for the standards drop me a pm and I'll sort ya out.

    Cheers
    Fusion
