I quite like the first one actually. But perhaps try taking some of the 'grey' tones out - play around with curves maybe, bring out more of the darker tones in the image.

    Hi Ballyman,

    Couple of observations;

The light in both shots seems a bit flat and they both lack a bit of contrast. You could make them a bit more vibrant if you boosted the saturation a wee bit. Also compositionally they could me made more interesting by trying some different viewpoints. They look to me like you took them at eye level. Try getting down lower - say to just above the level of the ears of corn to create a different view than someone would see if they were just walking through the field. Just summit to think about maybe, hope this doesn't sound harsh!

I think the sky may be your greatest enemy in both - it's in the yeuch category. In the first it is ever so slightly blown (above the bridge and to the trees) which will give you trouble when adding more contrast.

Its very worth while if you notice a bright area (such as a sky of a sunset even on a grey day) to check your camera's histogram after taking the shot and compensate accordingly if there's anything untoward at either end of the histogram scale.

In the second its just that horrible grey with no great definition or anything going on in it.

Unfortunately not much you can do with such a sky.

I agree with beef - bump up the saturation in both and add a little contrast (although i think you'll be constrained in #1).

Composition wise, #2 has that area of trampled wheat in the bottom left. To me you'd have been better taking two steps to the right and one forward to eliminate that area from the composition. This might also have gotten rid of the house (mid range far right).

I like the stillness of the water and reflection in #1 - it the sky had been kinder, it would probably have made a super shot. The line of the river is effective from the angle you took it at. There is a lot going on in the photo and although it is imbalanced right v left hand side, the line of the river suggests that the composition is all about the river and the bridge. I think this works for it (to me anyway). The growth in the bottom right hand side is a nice pick to add to the composition.

    HTH - Well done.

I dont know what you mean by this? neither shot calls for a narrow depth of field really.

As for the shots themselves, i have to agree with ACD when he mentions the sky, unfortunately thats the way it is round these parts!

Id like to see the contrast/colours boosted a little too especially in the second one to bring out the yellow in the field and the Green vehicle.

Hmm, you're right. I used Kigo Image Converter (a freebie) to add the watermark and I just checked the original and the difference in sharpness between the two pics is significant.

I can't get the mogrify application to work in LR for some reason. I've installed it a few times but to no avail.

I've played around with the first pic a bit and I can't seem to get a PP'd look that I'm hapy with :(

Thanks for the advice on composition. I need to pay more attention to whats in the viefinder rather than just firing off shots. I'm new to this so any help is appreciated, however harsh!

Did you read the installation instructions on the site? I was looking to install it last night, but you need to have certain other things installed for it to work. Looked like more hassle than it was worth to me and I gave up before I started.

Yea, I have everything installed. I've checked and rechecked. The application appears fine in LR but when you go to export pics it just errors and fails.
