Hi guys, got a nasty on my laptop.
Symptoms are that IE can close itself down for no reason.
McAfee picks it up, but wont let me delete it.

Anything i can do, tried google, but not much help and any that others have tried seems not to work anyway.

I think a format and re boot is needed, not a big deal since i have this laptop nearly 3 years and never formatted it yet, but its the backing up of stuff i need to keep thats putting me off.

Anyway if anyone has any advice id appreciate it.

Boot in safe mode to remove it completely. And use something other than McAfee.

Any recommendations for another anti-virus then?
Always found McAfee to be great. But this virus seems to stop it from getting rid of it.

Any of the free alternatives in the sticky at the top of this forum. I haven't used any of them in a while myself, so I'll let someone else advise specifically.

Try using avast! or AVG, I am using avast!, both have free versions.

McAfee is a piece of shít, really hogs your system. There are other better AV programs which are free and have a much better detection rate. Personally I reccommend Avira, Free version here

Just to follow up, downloaded Avira and ran in Safe mode, seems to have done the trick.

Ive sucessfully managed to put of formatting this thing for another while!

    Cheers for all the help.

Get yourself good spyware scanners also, I recommned superantispyware and malwarebytes as spyware scanners, scan every-so-often with them
spywareguard and spyware blaster offer good real-time protection, just enable all protections.
All can be used together with little or no effect on your cpu or ram. I'd advise using all 4 for complete protection along with Avira.

Read this sticky from the Virus & Malware Removal forum. Some great information.

    You should have..

    1x Anti-Virus Program (AVG)

1x Firewall Program (XP- ZoneAlarm) (Vista- Just enable the built in Vista firewall, I have been using it since Vista's release and never had any issues.)

2x Anti-Spyware Scanner Programs (MBAM) (SuperAntiSpyware)

    1x Anti-Spyware real-time protection (Spyware Blaster)

    Also recommended: (CCleaner) (Firefox)

If you choose to install AVG anti-virus, make sure and uninstall McAfee as both will interfere with each other.

I have been using this set-up for a long time and I have never had anything more than invasive cookies. Of course, sensible browsing helps :)

AVG is a very resource hungry solution I have found. Especially the link scanner. And zone alarm just bugs the hell out of me.

For AV I reccomend Avast and firewall get Comodo. For spyware there is also adaware and spybot.

also as IE is tied in to the OS - theres always the chance that once it gets corrupted, it can get your whole system. That, and it renders webpages slower than other third party browsers. It might be wise to get Firefox or Opera, etc.
