I bought a 99 Mitsubishi Lancer, the belt was changed at 72000 miles, how often should it be changed after that?

Theres no manual with the car so cant consult that.

    Thanks in advance.

Do you know the history of the car? If you are unsure of the mileage, it might even be worth having it done straight away

What's the mileage of the car now?

Usually you should replace it every 60,000 miles, but depending on your knowledge of the previous history of the car, mickdw might be right that you should go ahead and change it.

The car now has 97000 miles on it.

Also, if it's 4-5 years since it was changed, it should be done again regardless of the mileage travelled in that period.

    I'd agree with every 60k / 4 years.

If you're unsure, then change it - it leaves a right mess if it snaps.

Have a look on the belt cover, most mechanics with scribe something like TB72 on it to indicate when it was changed - just in case you are taking the sellers word for it.

The timing belt is the most important service to be done on any car so it is so It is worth while getting it done only by a main Mitsubishi dealer, their mechanics are specifically trained in these cars and know this job inside out, will use only genuine parts and will guarantee the work. They will also check out other components such as the fan belts and water pump. It may cost you a bit more but it is worth it for peace of mind.

Many back street garages will take short cuts and use bogus parts and will not want to know you 5 months down the line if something goes wrong.

    Just an idea but..

If you feel a maindealer may shaft you on price so want to go the independent mechanic route, I've heard of ppl sourcing the OEM parts themselves and paying an independant mechanic to install them...
