Low wireless speeds

So NTL just installed their 20 meg line, I'm testing it at the minute, when I'm connected by wireless I get download circa 300K and upload 1.5meg, from another laptop I did get 20meg down but it's intermittent, at 5 now, and when I connect this PC directly to the router via cable I get 5meg down, any idea why I would only be getting 300k by wireless from this machine, seems a bit odd to say the least

Lots of threads on this. In a sentence, wifi's bandwidth is very low. The achieved bandwidth is even lower -- you rarely get a throughput of 54 Mbps, 108 Mbps or whatever is claimed on the box.

Moving further away from the router, interference and other factors are most likely causing the drop. With slower broadband connections, you won't notice. However your cursor over the wireless icon in the taskbar and you should see what speed at which you're connected to your router.
