    Hey everybody,

I recently bought a 05 S40 1.6 diesel model, 38k miles on the clock. I am just wondering how many miles roughly i should be getting to a tank, based on other peoples experiences?? i seem to be getting around 520 miles toa fill which I thought would be slightly better? Clearly fuel economy was a big factor in me buying this car...
And I don't have the air con on or such like at all. Is this a Ford or PSA engine anyone know?

    Thanks.

How big is the tank? Engine is a joint PSA/Ford unit, and is good.

p.s. Use the aircon weekly. The refridgerant is also the systems lubricant.

    That seems about right.

Got a 05 VX Astra 1.7 CDTI (100) back if Feb and still trying to get 500 miles from a tank.

Then again its doing around 70-80mph up and down the motorway to Dublin five times a week.

Id say with more normal driving around 55-60mph, would be able to get above 500 miles a tank.

Currently averaging around 48mpg using the fill to the brim and repeat test.

Car has 50k miles on it and had 38k miles back at the end of Feb. :D Miles Muncher!

not a volvo but i have an audi A4 tdi 130bhp and get 760miles to a tank saying that mostly straight runs (waterford to wexford twicw daily)

But doesn't the A4 have a 65 litre tank? The S40 only has 55 Litres, so you can't do a straight comparison of "miles to a tank".

I have a Ford Focus with the same engine as the S40 and I am getting around 620 miles from a full tank of diesel from mixed driving. I have the car a year now and in fact the economy has steadily improved with time and a full service.

Taking into account the S40 is probably a bit heavier than the Focus and the Focus only has a 53 litre fuel tank you still should give the car a bit of time to adjust to your driving style.

I have the exact same Car [cept Opel not VX] and I get regularly 800km before I really have to start worrying about that annoying flashing light. Got 860km once but I'd say I was running on fumes. Regular M8 driver doing at least 80 miles a day.

    55l = 12.0985 gallons. 520/12.0985 = 42.98mpg. I'd have hoped for nearer 50mpg tbh.

That's very poor. My ten year old Nissan diesel gets 45MPG, and I thought that was bad.

Yea, i thought the same alrite. Maybe I am abit heavy with the right foot but would not have thought excessively so. I only have it 3 weeks so maybe I still need time to adjust to it.

I get about 700 miles per tank in my Passat.
I like to compare range in cars and I think the BMW 520D has the biggest range of any car on sale.

Drove to the North this weekend and calculated my mpg for the very first time ever. Got 35.5 but car is a 1997 S40 petrol and was doing +/- 120kmh on the dual carriageways which is not the ideal speed for fuel consumption. Quiet surprised, thought I'd get a lot less in that old yoke.

I like to compare range in cars and I think the BMW 520D has the biggest range of any car on sale.
The 520D has a 70L tank as far as I can see online, quoted highway consumption of 5L / 100 KM would give it 1400km range.
However Peugeot advertising the fact that a couple in Australia got 2030km from a single tank in the new 308 HDI - on a 60L tank.
    http://www.autobloggreen.com/2008/05/22/hypermiling-couple-drive-peugeot-308-around-australia-at-75-6mpg/
Have seen the official extra urban figures of 70.1MPG

I'd just go with the mixed mpg to compare. Hypermiling would be another thing entirely .

Agreed, that is why I compared the officially quoted extra urban figures for each vehicle. I was lazy however and didnt dig up a metric figure for the Peugeot, I now have and it's 4.0L / 100Km which would equate to 1500Km from a single 60L tank - still beating the BMW.

Puegeot has 60 litres and does 62.8mpg
520d has an 852 mile range in mixed driving.
    Puegeot has 828 mile range.
318d also has the Peugeot beat with an 832 mile range.

Not my words, the words of Top Gear magazine ie. figures taken from there.

Swings and roundabouts really, pulling random figures off various webpages myself.
4L / 100Km is 70.62 Miles per Imperial Gallon which is what I have found as the best case peugeot figure online.
852 miles divided by 70L (15.397841 Imperial Gallons - google) is 55.3MPG - BMW quote 5.0L / 100Km or 56.50 Miles per Imperial Gallon as best case for the 520D on their own websites.
I have no links to offer to what I would consider independent sources.

    Righto, I pulled 4.0L/100km from
    http://www.supermotor.com/nuevos/coches/coche/PEUGEOT/308/CESPE38125/5p_Sport_1.6_HDI_110cv_FAP.html
    and
    http://automoto.aliceadsl.fr/nuovo/Auto/visualizza.php3?arrayid=19628
In any case I find it unlikely that a car the size of a 5 series with large tires etc would have a 2mpg advantage on the peugeot.
A quick look around leads me to believe they have the same drag coefficent - 0.29, however the BMW has much larger tires & weighs a lot more.

In any case if one is to trust the actual manufacturers data, the 308 110bhp is claimed 4.0L/100Km by Peugeot UK (3.8L/100 for the 90bhp) - http://ww3.peugeot.co.uk/ppp/PPPWEBUK/Brochures_Peugeot/technical/308.pdf -page 9

whereas BMW themselves claim 4.7L/100km on their Irish site for the 520D - http://www.bmw.ie/ie/en/newvehicles/5series/sedan/2007/allfacts/engine/engine_data.html

In any case I think they're both economical cars with not a whole lot seperating them in fuel consumption.

That site gives 4.9 litres per 100km.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,834 ✭✭✭air

For combined cycle yes, extra urban is 4.0L/100km.
I was comparing Extra Urban figures in all cases above - i.e. the BMW figure rises to 5.9L/100km for combined cycle.
