i started this photography lark about 2 months ago with the mindset that i'll stick with the standard 18-55mm lens and see how i get on, but no that wasn't good enough, when i see a lens i just have to buy it.

    i've already bought a 50mm f/1.8 and just bought a EF 70-200mm from ebay.

will it ever stop or will i just see a specific lens and go right that's it i have to have it. i really need to get back to college pronto.

    *edit* 450d owner btw.

see the thing is i bought these lenses on a whim, i got the 50mm for 50 euro less than online retailers, and i got the 70-200mm for 150euro less the same online retailer that i priced the 50mm from.

i don't even know if the lenses are good, they are complete impulse buys, i only recieved the 50mm today and haven't even had a chance to use it, and here's my ebaying again to get another lens

*edit* is it normally that quick to get bit by the bug, how long was it for you all to get bit?

Ditto to that. I originally budgeted to spend around €900 (450D). Ended up spending about €2k, which now consists of:

    The 450D
    50mm 1.4 EF lens
    55-200 Sigma
    12-24 Tokina
    430EX speedlite (which I still haven't used:o)

So - yeah. You are indeed pretty much ****ed now.:)

My newest lens cost €30 :)

It doesn't have to be this way. Down with the gear, I say!

The more you buy, the more you have to carry round in that bag too... especially true for those big buggers like the 70-200 L...

    Oi!!!

Ok, I've a few lenses. But there are some I'd like to have, that I don't - 16-35mm f/2.8 L II, 85mm f/2 L II, 400mm f/2.8 IS L. Some of my lenses get more used than others.

It's an endless cycle. And, never mind the body and lenses, there are all the extras too - batteries, filters, tripod, heads, cleaning gear, memory cards. It never ends. :D

I want the 200mm f/2 so that I can take pictures in Tolka Park on those winter evenings. :(
The bug might die down & appear to have left you, but it will only be dormant, with the ever present threat that it will rear its ugly head at the first sign of some "spare" cash.

i was falling into this rutt. i budgeted to spend about 800 quid which got me a 400D with kit lens and a sigma 70-300.

then i realized i needed a bigger camera bag: 90 quid, then i needed a tripod and head: 200 quid, then i wanted to try ND filters: 50 quid, then i needed a polarizer: 30 quid, then uv filters: 60 quid, then a nifty fifty: 60 quid, then i got a chance to get a sigma 17-70: 150 quid.

i use my camera occasionally, but i have put a complete ban on purchaseing more gear until i make use of what i have.

i have more than enough to keep me going now and at present i am by far the weakest link in in the photo taking chain/process, and not the gear. until i become better, so that my gear limits me i wont be doing any major purchases.

il be considering a flash in about 6 months time as a family member is getting married, but apart from that, no more lens's, filters or anything.

i could buy gear forever, fill rooms with the stuff but its a waste if you dont use it.

Well i was bitten .. but after getting 2 L lenses in the range 24-200
    (24-70f2.8L, 70-200 f2.8L) I have calmed a bit ..
Im only half thinking of getting a super wide now ..

Thats the good thing about L lenses .. once you get them, you have the best in the range ..

The good thing about buying lenses is that they hold their value very well.
So when it comes to upgrading you know you will get a pretty good resale
price. (Thats how i justify it)
...A low risk low loss investemet, much more fun than having "shares". :)

Horrible horrible bags, and much smaller than you might think too. Nova 5 (for example) is much more useable all day...

50eur new delivered from Canada. Can't remember the ebay seller. I've actually had to buy a much smaller bag as well though as the nova is too big for hopping in and out of cars at motorshows and stuff. Just got a small canvas shoulder bag for that.

small is good. I already have a vertex 200 AW :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,648 ✭✭✭bp_me

Small can be good. Uncomfortable never is. And the whole sling thing doesnt work as well as you would think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,878 ✭✭✭whyulittle

Sold my Slingshot soon after I got it. Wasn't a fan of it. Replaced it with a Vertex, but use my Mini Trekker when I want something smaller.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

I have the Slingshot 300AW and find it brilliant. I can pack all I need for an outing in it. It'll even fit the 300mm f/2.8 lens.

I did the same - replaced it with a nova 5. way better (imo obviously)

I'm going through a phase where I'd rather more cameras than more lenses for a single system if you get me.
I keep checking ebay for a bronica/hasselblad medium format. it's just a matter of time, I'm weak and I know it.

Actually yeah .. i have been half-looking (glancing more) at a good flash too,

I always thought flash were no good for wildlife photos with a TP lens, but
some of these Speedlites have long ranges (30+ feet) !

I'd love to, but I already have the f4 L IS version which is better for close focusing for bugs etc than the f2.8 so I couldn't really justify having two 300's even though the 2.8 is sharper and faster etc :D

What I'd really love would be the 500 f4 L IS for birds and the like though.

The 200 1.8 I got has been a bit of a holy grail for me as I had bid on loads but never won. And then finally at Christmas I did win one (right when I could least afford it!) as demand for the lens had dropped due to the announcement of the 200 f2.
