have been wondering for a while - all lenses for canon crop sensors and all reviews and discussion of same will always state, for example, that 100mm equals 160mm on a 40d etc.

that makes sense to me on an EF lense. it lets you know that you're getting something different with your lense if you have a certain camera.

however, now that there are EFS lenses, which only work on the crop cameras as far as i understand - why dont they just put the actual mm on the lense - i.e. the 1.6x mm ???

I think they do this for people who use film as the older ef lenses were correct on film and making a change over to the efs having 1.6 crop factor and the ef will just confuse people. Its best to leave everything as one and let people work it out for themselves

I couldn't care less about crop factors it only annoys me when i know my widest lense would be wider on a 1.3 crop but that will only set in when i actually get one.

And then you'll have newbies saying they found the same looking lens one ef and one efs but they are totally different zooms
I just think its too major a change to make

    thanks ricky91T.

    I can understand your point.

I just find it a bit annoying buying lenses that are 10-22 and so on when i know buying them that i have to mentally convert them by 1.6 and that they'll never work on full frame anyway..........

Because they give the focal length of the the lens based on the lens, not of the camera you may or may not be using. What would they do if they put a 1.3x sensor on a camera?

They have a 1.3x crop sensor, it's on the 1D series. 1Ds and 5D are full frame, and then xxD, xxxD, xxxxD are all 1.6x crop sensors.

The figures on the lens are what they are because it is a 10-20mm lens, but it has an effective focal length, x1.6 etc.

Olympus sell their 70-300 with a sticker on it saying 140-600 (x2) but I'd prefer they didn't.
