for the last few months about 1/4 went to the tax man ( because i thought i was on emergancy tax)

It's hard to say what you should be paying based on the information you give. If you weren't there all that long the the reason is probably because emergency tax is imposed on a phased basis. For the first four weeks you pay tax at the standard rate for the first €616 and have a €32 tax credit. For weeks five through eight the tax credit disappears. For the ninth and all successive weeks you then lose the standard rate cut-off and all income is taxed at the higher rate. If you've been there about four months this would sound about right.

    More info needed.
Also why have you not received your tax credit cert from revenue
if you have been there several months.

so to start off i started in may and as i said this was my last month... i was on 2500 a month and for may and june i paid about 750 in tax and then this month i paid 1152 in tax...

i handed in my p45 straight away so i should be off emergency tax by now? if i was on emergency tax can i get it back?

im 20 single and living with the parents and i dident apply for tax credits...

i feel like i was shafted by them as it wasent the job they said it was and now the money wasent worth the time or effort i put in

i applied for a tax refund and got back less than half of what i was expecting.

It's possible that you still coud be on emergency tax despite handing in a P45.

Did you have previous work before pay? The tax paid there could also affect this job's pay.

Living at home with parents doesn't prevent you from being eligible for tax credits. You need to get this sorted with the tax office.

If you are still unemployed after 28 days you can claim back your tax,
    outherwise through your new employer.
Bye the way, your employer should have sent part of your p45
to revenue, who in turn send you and your new employer
your new tax credit cert, looks like they never done this.
It would never take this length of time.

Even 750 tax is far too much on 2500 gross pay. Sounds like you are on emergency tax.

On your payslip it should say your tax band.

Ring the revenue and they will sort it out for you.

    Hi Anto

Out of curiosity I've just ran your salary through payroll since month of May, these are the amounts you would have paid if on emergency tax.

    May €347.00
    Jun €500.00
    Jul €1025.00
    Aug €1025.00
    Sep €1025.00

I also ran your salary through payroll since month of May with monthly Tax Credits of 305 and Cut off point of 2950. (standard rate, you could be entittled to higher, or less)
You pay no tax at all.
-Your salary doesn't exceed the cut off point.
The above figures are based on no previous employment figures.

    So couple of points here.
It's very bad practice for a company to keep an 'ee on Emergencey tax for that long.
However, legally the onus is on the employee NOT the Employer to ensure the correct PAYE status is applied.(eg Emergencey)
The fact that you have gone back to work for the same company, more or less, it would suggest to me that you won't see any improvement in your payment scenario.
I would urge you contact the revenue ASAP and tell them what has happened.
It may be a case where your 'er won't want to refund apprx €3922 to you through their payroll.
You will need your PPS number and your employers number handy.
You should advise the revenue that you would like the refund in the form of a cheque rather than higher tax credits and cut off allowances.
You can contact the Revenue on 1890 33 34 25.
I would also suggest you do this before the Revenue get bogged down with end of year paperwork etc.

Anto, I hope that's helpful to you!! :)

It appears that a sizable percentage of employers either don't know or don't care and are willing to leave their employees festering on emergency tax until they sort it out themselves. In fact, based on my experience in the workplace I'd say that ignoring it seems to be the norm. Also, I've never encountered an employer who actually tells new staff that they need to contact the Revenue about this.
