Affliction: over US$ 3 million in purses
    Organization outdoes UFC in pay

That Affliction is set to take on the UFC's reign among American MMA organizations everyone knows. What was a mystery till today was how much the brand, famous for its clothing, was prepared to invest in this new battle front. And from the look of it, they are prepared to invest more than a little. The purses paid to the fighters who fought at last Saturday's event, were released, going over the 3-million-dollar mark. The sum has never been reached by the UFC.

The biggest check of the night went to Tim Sylvia, who was submitted in only 36 seconds by Russian Fedor Emelianenko. Curiosly, the Russian fighter, considered the star of the card, received "only" US$ 300,000.

So satisfied were they with the first event, Affliction's directors are already preparing for the next edition. The most likely date is November 8th. The location has yet to be determined, but the presence of Fedor on the card is pretty much certain.

Check out the purses in dollars officially announced. The amounts already include win bonuses pre-arranged in the fighters' contracts.

    Tim Sylvia: $800,000
    Andrei Arlovski: $ 750,000
    Fedor Emelianenko: $300,000
    Matt Lindland: $300,000
    Josh Barnett: $300,000
    Ben Rothell: $250,000
    Vitor Belfort: $140,000
    Renato "Babalu" Sobral: $90,000
    Paul Buentello: $80,000
    Pedro Rizzo: $70,000
    Mike Whitehead: $50,000
    Rogerio Minotouro: $50,000
    Terry Martin: $30,000
    Gary Goodridge: $25,000
    Fabio Nascimento: $20,000
    Mike Pyle: $20,000
    Edwin Dewees: $15,000
    Mark Hominick: $10,000
    Savant Young: $7,000
    Justin Levens: $6000
    JJ Ambrose: $5,000
    Ray Lizama: $3,000

    Total: US$ 3,332.100

One the head guys said it did over 100,000 ppv buys at $40 a pop they've still made a profit and that's not including the live gate

I think he's bull****ting with the 100,000 buys to be honest, they'd be lucky to get half that. Also their costs aren't just limited to paying the fighters. Setting up the whole show nd doing promotions and advertising probably added up to another couple of million. That also doesn't include Fedor's $2m signing bonus.

And Megadeath, Michael Buffer, renting the arena. It all adds up. :D

We care. I know its not directly about the fights but as an MMA fan this is very interesting because they're the firsat org since PRIDE who can rival UFC with top level marquee fights. We want to talk about the profits because we want to discuss the longevity and prospects of the Affliction MMA brand.

The Don may not lose money very often but none of these guys have any experience promoting MMA so its a new venture. Not guaranteed to be a success.

The great thing is they still have a lot of matchups there, the biggest one for me being Randy v Fedor.

Also: Arlovski v Rizzo 2, Arlovski v Fedor (on October 21st), Barnett v Fedor etc etc

U mean so u can watch on tape delay instead of live? I prefer live myself. Or tape the live show and watch first thing in the morning. Never liked the wait on Sunday.

If no one else cares, Affliction does, if they arent making money, no more shows.

Business men like donald trump do lose sometimes, and lose big.
More importantly, the relationship betweeen the Don and Affliction has not been disclosed, i.e. he might not have put up a significant investment, but could reap alot of the rewards

In fairness to Setanta, you can always watch the replays on Sunday at a more civilsed hour -you only need to stay up past bedtime if you want to watch it live (something Bravo never did)

Fedor Emelianenko will defend his newly won World Association of Mixed Martial Arts heavyweight championship belt on Oct. 11 against Andrei Arlovski in the UFC’s backyard.

Affliction’s second MMA promotion will be at the Thomas & Mack Center on the UNLV campus, in the shadow of the UFC’s corporate offices, according to a venue official.

UFC was on Setanta at that same time last Sunday. It was also on Monday at 7pm

EDIT: Hang on, the tv guide says that it was also on Setanta Sports Ireland at 7pm on Monday. I only have that channel, did anyone see it?

"I talked to Tom Atencio today, and he made it clear that they cannot lose this kind of money on a second show...The reality is the same as it was a week ago, you still need television [to be successful]."

-- Dave Meltzer speaking to Bryan Alvarez on Wrestling Observer Radio.

That's what I was thinking. I was listening to that show earlier. Meltzer's always said that you need tv if you want to make it, because that's by far the best way to promote the product. PRIDE died when they lost tv. The UFC made it big when they got tv

I'd say the 100,000 buys is a little exaggerated too

tose purses are only disclosed contract sums and don't include bonuses that don't have to be declared officially, i expect fedor as paid a hell of a lot more

affliction is giving it a go but weve seen this thing before were rich people pour money into mma cuz they think its a gravy train, business men do lose money a lot contrary to what someone else said in this thread, the difference is they tend not to do it for long, if affliction doesn't see real profits in the short term then its dead

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 362 ✭✭ThatBloke

It's worth noting that Affliction only get half of the revenue from PPVs as well, the PPV compnay take the other half.

50% at the very most, the PPV providers often make more money from it than the company putting on the show

Allfiction heads have already stated they currently have three PPV model and will re-evaluate after that.

Affliction may have been telling porkies, PPV looking more like 50k, and gate figure was seriously inflated

I don't think people will be talking about Affliction this time next year. It's impossible to make an MMA business work without a good tv deal.

And it doesn't help paying guys 300k a fight (Lindland, Rothwell) who aren't doing anything for your business in terms of adding ppv buys on the shows their on.

It's a more high profile Bodog the more I think about it

The PPV buys were estimated at 50000-85000 at the time that Atencio said they got 100000. But he couldn't have had any more info than anyone else in the estimation process, so he was obviously inflating the number at the time

There was a bit in the Wrestling Observer about the tickets. There were about 350 tickets priced at $1000 and all but twelve were sold. Six were given away out of that twelve and the others were unsold. But the point was raised that with the amount of VIPs in those seats, those people didn't buy their tickets themselves. Like Donald Trump and his gang. Yet the tickets were still considered "sold" rather than given away as Affliction bought the tickets themselves. They had to pay tax on all these tickets just so it would look like they sold a load of tickets

Affliction are apparently looking for some fighters to take a paycut in exchange for paperbag like opponents

Yeah, I read about that in the Wrestling Observer, sounds like they're stuggling. They indicated that they knew they'd take a big hit on the first show but it seems now that they didn't expect such a large loss. I said yesterday that Affliction reminds me of Bodog, but they don't have anywhere near the same amount of money as Bodog

I know they wanted to start out with a bang, but paying matt lindland 300K and Timmy 800k is just dumb. If those guys were fighting in my back garden, I would'nt watch.
