So who did you recruit BS? Did you volunteer to lead a team? Did you get two others to train with you? Did you push to get coaching? Sponsorship? Did you bring up the match at a club meeting with the committee or a club shoot with the members? What exactly did you do?

I brought it up at club meeting, looked for anyone interested. Two other lads interested but we needed at least 5 (6 allowed) for a team. Coaching wouldn't have been a problem. I know a good few lads who have shot clay pigeon for Ireland. Sponsorship ? Club would likely have contributed to cost. I am on the committe of the club and have been since I joined.

What's the de-motivation factor? Just couldn't be arsed, or afraid of competition.

That's a pity. I've always tried to encourage people to enter competitions as early as possible, for two main reasons:
    1. You learn an awful lot at a competition. Even if you come dead last by a mile you'll still find out at least one thing that you can work on in training. Not just that, but you now have a reason to work on it because you've just proven that it needs to be fixed. There's no shame to coming last provided you did your best and learn from your mistakes.
    2. Your entry fee to the competition keeps the sport running. Even if you're crap, you still contribute to the sport and you encourage others by showing them how far they've come.

The first part is hugely true, and being a recent newcomer to the sport I can vouch for it entirely. I was dropping fifty odd points off my indoor scores when I first started shooting outdoors. Having taken the time to analyse it and get in some practice, the scores are much closer now, and without competition, I couldn't have found the drive or the opportunities for proper tests of what I was doing. Training doesn't do the same thing for me in terms of incentive.

It's also worth getting the first competitions out of the way I think when you can't expect great results out of yourself. If I expected more of myself when I started, I'd have been violently disappointed and might have been put off the competitive aspect of the sport somewhat, but I managed to suck rather a large amount, and so got some experience under my belt, which may help me not suck at a later date.

To be fair we had an informal club shoot recently and a few of the lads are new to shotgun shooting and weren't hitting a lot. Nobody was laughing or mocking. A few of us more "experienced" guys gave a few pointers and tips and there was improvement for the newbees, which is waht clubs are for after all. To help lads, we've one lady, to improve etc. Club are planning another informal shoot and a good few lads seem interested that weren't there the last day. Things may be looking up
