Whale on the beach :(

    Hi,

Long time boards member 1st personnal issues post.

I'm really worried about something. I'm going away next week to the states. I'm going with a good friend and were staying with her sister and her friends. Its beach time again and I really feel like i'm going to throw up everytime i think about it. I haven't bought any swim-wear yet because i'm so scared about it. I don't understand it either because i was fine last year and i've lost a stone since then and dropped a dress size. All the girls going are size 8/10. I could definenitly loose more weight maybe another stone and i'd be happy but its too late for that.

If i bought an all in one bathing-suit would this draw more attention to my size?
I know this sounds silly and no-one really cares but i feel sick thinking about being a big whale on a beach :(

a tankini is your best friend. covers the tummy but much more flattering then a one piece.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,518 ✭✭✭✭dudara

I understand. Swimwear takes a lot of confidence.

First thing first. Tanktinis or one-pieces are great for covering up any wobbly bits. I have a black adidas one-piece that is extremely flattering and because it's proper swimwear rather than fashion, it's strong and hold bits in well.

You can get wraps and sarongs as well.

But I suppose the important thing is to try to be confident in yourself. You've done really well in losing the weight that you've lost. Try to take pleasure in that rather than fussing over something you can't change right now.

How about one of those wrap, saron thingys (i'm a guy i have NO idea what they're called.... Or a Tshirt over the swim wear or something.

Frankly (and I realise i'm a guy so it's easier to say) who gives a flying proverbial. Get out there and have fun and damn the torpedoes!

I bet there'll be at least 1 guy there who can't take his eyes off you! You'd be surprised!

    Good luck, and have fun!

Get out that bikini and dont worry about anyone else. Honestly! I know it's easier said than done sometimes, but you dont want to be spending your holiday worrying about this, when no-one actually notices!

If you want to wear a bikini, wear a bikini, if you want to wear a swim suit, wear a swim suit. I find those Kaftan things great for throwing on over the bikini whenever i want to stand up and go for a paddle or over to the shop etc.

    Enjoy your holiday!!

Yep, Ross is right get a sarong, you can tie them on all different ways, bring it around behind your back and criss cross it over your chest and tie the two ends behind your neck if your problem areas are your boobs, or waist...

Or just tie it around your waist if its the bum and thighs!

You can get all kinds from see through ones right to dark ones -also when you are in the warm sunshine, the flesh is warmer and looks smoother and less lumpy, cellulite doesnt look so bad.

Use the art of distraction too, slap a big flower in your hair or an eyecatching pair of sunglasses etc, it can make a big difference!

Anyway well done on the weight loss and have a great hol !

    :D

Err I doubt I could tie it around my boobs... At least I hope not!! :|

Seriously though, get on out there girl! Work it etc. Have a fun hol and there's some great advice above! We're all shy about some of these things, the great freedom is realising that nobody really cares when you get there! :)

    All the best.

first off, Congrats on losing the weight you have so far

you don't say that you're morbidly overwieght or if you just feel like a whale cos your mates are all 8-10, but i think a lot of looking good comes from knowing your shape, what suits you, and knowing you look good. confidence-five! \o

(im about a size 10 and you'll never catch me in a bikini-im happy with my bod but id not be comfrtble with that much of me on show)

ANYWAYs, if you don't like the tankini idea someone else suggested, i think M+S do body-shaping swimwear, decent looking stuff that'll hold in anything you don't want seen.

Tankini all the way girl! I would be conscious of my figure and i dont mind wearing that when i go to the beach- i feel hideous in an all in one swim suit and i would die at the thought of putting on a bikini but definitely a tankini is the best option.

Also as others said a sarong is good to cover your legs while you are walking around the beach. Take it off then when you go to sunbath and enjoy the sun ( remember the sunscreen :))

Ps I cant wait for my sun holiday!!! thanks for reminding me :)

Your right i'm a size 14 but its the fact that they are ALL so much slimmer than me plus they are all quite petite and i'm nearly 6ft so i kinda stick out in the group. I've seen a lot of posting in boards /media too recently that has really made me think badly of my size. I'm sure i'll be fine once i starting tanning it up.

Anyways I really appreciate the advice i'm going to go for a bikini and if i feel like i'm having a fat day i'll sarong it up!

    Thanks for the advice,

6 ft and size 14 sounds perfectly proportioned.

    All this worrying is silly.

I wuoldnt be worrying...you sound to have a good figure!!!

If you feel self concious I would +1 the tanktini and sarong...but be proud of your bosy! A great acheivement for the weight loss! well done!

if your feeling that bad about it maybe buy a kafkan (think its how its spelt) or the swimsuits that are a one piece that have hole cut out of them you know the oes hide all tummys. though to be honest you sound totally in proportion for your height.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,440 ✭✭✭✭Piste

    I hate swinwear season too!

I wear surf shorts cos they're big and colourful and hide my legs, I wear a swimsuit-material t-shirt with this that covers the tops of my arms and is in a colour to match the shorts.

In all fairness you wimmins and your glamour magazines have you convinced its a crime to enjoy a hamburger every now and then and that if you want see through your own ribcage youre overweight.

    Curves are sexy. period.

About confidence whats worked for me in the past is realising hell, youre on vacation. Theres nobody here that is going to judge you (unless your friends are bastards) so stand tall, stand proud, stand half naked. Confidence is 98% of all sexiness.

Oh, and SPF 30 ;) sunburns are a bitch. If your skin still feels hot after lotion application its just the heat, not the UV - get wet a bit.

Hi OP,i can understand that going to the us where people will be a size 6 on the beach and your mates being sizes 8-10 is causing you some anxiety because of your size 14,but its all image and anything that comes from a shallow place like that has no real beauty behind it-

the fastest way not to draw attention to yourself is to feel self accepting about who and what you are and you will radiate that out from you.

Others may be skinny and have the image but they may not be radiating happiness and confidence.

I have recently gone up to a size 12/14 and i was so upset for a while but i feel the happiest i have felt in years and i think people see that first.

There may be some hidden anxiety or nerves behind the weight issue like you have nerves about going away, but once you get there you will be fine, and you will notice that your skinny mates will have lots of insecurities too.

Size 14 and nearly 6ft, would love a piece of that ;)

And as the song goes "BIG GIRLS YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL"

Listen i hear ya! don't worry about it.... a good plan is to put a light base of fake tan on as well this will make you feel batter. Tankini is your friend. M&S do a great range and tesco have some lovely pretty kaftan thingys.

Enjoy it and drink lots of water in the sun!

At nearly 6ft tall, I'd have thought 14 would be a normal size, wouldn't a 12 generally be a bit scrawny at that height? And I'm saying that as someone who likes slim / fit women...

From the sounds of your posts you've large breasts - use 'em, wear something that highlights your cleavage and you can be sure very few eyes will stray anywhere from there ;)

And, like a few others have mentioned - you're going to the states - there'll be women on that beach who're over size 20 and still wearing bikinis and quite possibly guys of similar size wearing Borat-style mankinis. You'll be fine!

Ok not being bad but that makes me feel worse :( I'm sure you didn't intend to do that though.

Thanks for the advise I'll take it on board.

Apologies, did'nt mean to make you feel that bad. But you would be the right proportion for being 6ft tall. Don't feel guilty or sad about how you look.

But you are 6ft tall and a size 14 a

OP, I'm sure Buzzard was just taking into account the fact that you're tall when he referred to you as "big". Men are generally hopeless and are the first to admit that!

As most women know size has very little to do with beach confidence. I swear on that beach you will see these two things 1) A size 20+ woman in a bright bikini and 2) a size 10 woman in a black one piece with a kaftan on and a sarong around her hips, nervously and self-consciously looking around to see if anyone is looking at her.

And it goes even further than that. You could be one of those coveted sizes and still hate lots about your body, scars, stretchmarks, birthmarks, spots, the list is almost endless. Sure, if nothing else you could always be unhappy with your shade of tan or length of hair.

I guess my point is that if you don't have confidence then you will always be able to find something that you don't like, something that's not perfect. Looking for perfection in any human is like looking for fire in a freezer. It's not there and it never will be.

OP, at 6 ft and a size 14, I can guarantee that you will have one of the better bodies on the beach. I grew up in Florida - I know from experience. ;)
If you're self conscious, try a tankini or sarong, as suggested. But really, don't worry about it at all. I'm assuming you're not going to one the glamour beaches like South Beach or Malibu (and there aren't many more than that in the States), so you're likely to encounter a lot of old, wrinkly geriatrics getting their daily sun or couples with young children. People at the beach don't pay nearly as much attention as you might think.

Sorry OP, assumption based on you're being a size 14, most women I've met who wear size 14 on top are quite well endowed.

    It's all about confidence love.
If it doesn't bother you, it won't bother anyone else...and if it does, well then they're not really worth being around are they

Hey I know how you feel. I'm heading to the states also with all slim friends & I'm not bringing ANY swimwear as I REFUSE for anyone to see my body. It's disgusting. I wasn't on any sun holiday before so it never really bothered me but I would die if they saw my body, so I'm determined that next summer when I go somewhere that I WON'T look like I do now. Fact. Very helpful advice already posted about all in ones and tankinis and sarongs. I saw a picture of Jade Goody wearing a red all in one suit in some magazine and she looked absolutely fab. Here are some other all in ones I looked up for ya & they look amazing http://www.marciekerby.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/plus-size-swim-suit.jpg

However at almost 6ft and a size 14 you have absolutely nothing to be ashamed or to be worried about covering up. I know it doesn't matter what people say because you've made up your mind about what you think you look like, but even so, try to listen because we're telling the truth! If only I had your figure eh :) I'd say grab some of the tips here and forget about your worries on hols. Really you don't want to bring yourself down. Bring back some sunshine though :) xxx

PS Well done on losing the weight! :)

i'd feel a little bad for ya if you you 5 foot 5 and a size 14 (alittle bad but not really) but tbh its madness feeling 'fat' at 6f and a size 14. don't be offended by what the guys said, they thought from your stats you'd be hot surely thats a good thing? alot of fellas love amazion women, tall womanly figures. name one goddess that was short?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,006 ✭✭✭PurpleBerry

name one goddess that was short?

Wow! What the hell was that about? I don't see any reason to start ripping on short women.

And to answer your challenge, here's the name of one Goddess who is short. Neesa.

Granted he/she was trying to make the OP feel better, but as a 5'3 woman herself, he/she is lucky they've dodged a slap!! LoL

honey i'm short too at 5'4 but i'm trying to make this girl feel better. i was talking about roman/greek goddesses because thats all i'm knowledge about. but well done, now we have a shortie goddess ;) chillax

edit: i dunno why it is but tall girls nearly always have a problem with their tallness. (not saying the op does, but at size 14 she sounds slim and healthy) it can look stunning if carried off with confidence instead of hunched over. sometimes us short girls don't know how lucky we are.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,006 ✭✭✭PurpleBerry

I just found it very ironic that while you tell one woman in one breath

"Oh you're fine, size doesn't matter."

in the next you infer "at least you're not short"

Roman? Greek? I don't know But at least now you know a Spanish (short) Goddess ;)

op,im a size 8 and im ****ting it about getting into a bikini next month, its really not about size as others have said,it truly is about confidence.
im off to find some before my hols ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 744 ✭✭✭leesmom

also, meant to say,a friend of mine has the mos amazing figure ever, like a model, really long legs and lovely toned stomach and when we were on hols she nearly brought her towel into the pool,to hide her "flab".
alot of women have a really bad habit of thinking they look like **** when actually thats not what others see or think

aw jebus infer? this is a forum on the internet, i just say what i mean, no need to read between the lines at all at all. :)
i just think a size 14 tall girl has less to complain about then a short size 14. and i say that from previous experience as i was once size 14 and had tall size 14 mates. but really it doesn't matter what the label says anyway, someone could be toned as a size 16 and wellshaped whereas you could be a size 10 but noticably a unusual shape that might make someone feel uncomfortable.

this is going off topic but anyway op, you sound like your i good shape and toned from losing weight, so forget about all this and just look forward to your holiday! :)
