    Hi all,

just looking for a bit of advice here. Born bred in Ireland but did primary degree and PHD in Biochemistry in uk. Completed a PGCE in A-level Biology (main subject) n second subject Integrated science (GCSE). I did PGCE in 2000 but for various reasons did not go teaching straight away. I have been working in Ireland since 2002 and have pondered with the idea for a while re getting into teaching in Ireland (secondary school).

I have contacted teaching council and they have told me I am eligible to apply for recognition of degrees and teaching qualification (PGCE) with a view to getting registered. SO I have taken the first step and have sent off the form and info!

I currently have a full time job and am wondering the best way to start re teaching e.g. I am thinking of going part time and doing a bit of subbing (once my qualifications are 'recognised')..is this the best way to start?

    cheers all

Why not just dive straight in and get a full time job teaching? Hunt around in the Indo(rag) on Thursdays and Sunday Indo (worse rag) also to get an idea of whats on offer...

How would you combine full time employment w/ subbing duties?

Sorry just paid attention - still think that's a hassle. Do one or t'other. Teaching science must be pretty cool too, I reckon.

point taken, of course I will be applying for full time teaching posts, but the realities of secondary school teaching are that such positions are not all that plentiful therefore I may have to make do with subbing for a while (also I have no post pgce experience teaching in secondary schools (see message)) which may make me more employable as a perm teacher. I cannot afford to give up my current job totally and rely on subbing only (rent to pay etc).
