Divx issue

My PS3 seems to have issues playing divx. Anyone that I have tried so far will either not play or will play with very distorted sound. Playing the same file on my normal divx player works fine. I normally burn them to a cd\dvd, should I be playing them direct from the hard drive? I am also running the lastest updates.

i remember reading somewhere that it can do divx but not xvid or something along those lines

Ps3 can handle DivX and XviD, but newer versions of both codecs will probably require that we get an XMB update. I've had some issues playing certain files on my PS3.

they might have encoded the audio track with an unusual codec?

get the gspot codec programme and it'll tell you exactly how the video and audio streams are encoded...

for audio problems I'm not sure. I know the firmware only supports files encoded with certain versions of the files depending on how they were encoded. Haven't a clue how to find out which will play though.

i had problems with ps3 playing avi files...
ended up encoding them to divx to resolve.
    However i came across a better way..simply rename the movie.avi to movie.divx
ps3 instantly recognises and plays the files perfectly.:D

There're a few reasons these files might not work. To put it simply, when encoding either DivX or XviD there are a number of options you can choose regarding how it's encoded. Some of these options are not supported by the PS3.

I don't watch Xvid/DivX on my PS3 anymore, too unstable, one to many episodes of Dexter froze halfway through, now I use my 360 instead, picture seems not quite as good, but at least the show doesn't stop during to good bit.

I spent EUR79 on a Phillips upscaler that decodes divx/xvid and output them on a HDMI multiport adaptor to my panel. I gave up trying to get xvid files to play on the PS3.

I use Xvid ALL the time on my never have problems. The only issues i've had are some old DivX 3.11 encoded files not playing. 3 of my mates all use PS3 for Xvid/Divx all the time don't know of any of them with problems.
The only issue i've seen would be voices muffled but this was always due to incorrect audio settings on Ps3 or Stereo.

Your problem is that the PS3 movie support isn't great. Some files work, but there are often problems with it (in terms of codec support, and read-error recovery). It's a pitty that they didnt just port mplayer/vlc player to the ps3 - would have made it compatible with everything, and robust with damaged disks.

TVersity is the best way to play movies on the PS3 - you need to use it on your laptop/pc and stream the transcoded movie to the PS3. Bit messy though - Probably just easiest to hook a laptop up to your tv, use vlc and just watch your movies without problems!

Its also possible to use Nero 7 Ultra as a server and transcode all formats to the Ps3, can be a bit tricky though.
