Hi all, my boss called me at home last night to tell me knew about an interview I had with another company. He wants to talk to me about it today and I am not sure yet what to say to him or if he is even allowed to ask me? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There's really nothing he can do to prevent you from looking for a new job.

I would also forget about the position you applied for - if someone knew him and informed him you were looking to leave, or they contact him for a reference despite you not listing him as a reference, they don't sound like the kind of company i'd want to work for!

That's very aggressive of him. Weirdo.

What are you actual reasons for wanting to leave?

Rather unprofessional of the company you interviewed with to allow such information to reach your boss, if you don't go for the job with them i would have a word with them there may well be data protection isues there. On the plus side, now he does know and you can't deny it, his calling you shows he's likely to be keen to keep you on and address the reasons you have for leaving, puts you in a good bargaining position. he can't use this information to fire you or anything that might lead to a constuctive dismissal case.

not much to worry about tbh. See what he has to say and take it from there.

I have no idea, why this happens. But it's really common for recruiters not to call the referees you have provided, but to call a former manager.

All the managers in Ireland think they're in a special managers club where their all friends,,, Like they think all celebrities are friends.

Many of my former sleazy managers couldn't tell the truth about the weather.

It's absolutely disgraceful behaviour. But it's not illegal.

One of my former managers had a very bad habit of giving nasty unsolicited refrences (very nasty)
Another manager would check references and previous managers not provided by the applicants. But if he really liked someone, he wouldn't check the references. And that's how he ended up employing a Paedophile who was on the run.
He liked the Paedo's personality so much he just had to give him a job without checking.

How did he find out about the interview OP?
