I already have a sky dish and pay for setanta. Its got a quad lnb for the local stuff but am thinking about getting a foreign sat system to get Premiership football on digitalb.(Will ditch setanta)

My brother has a great motorised system and after checking it out i'm looking to get 13, 16 & 19 + others to be on decided later. After reading thru the posts here i've decided (I think) to go for the T90 dish. Don't fancy the motorised as i'll install it myself and i don't want any on going maintenance...

    http://www.hm-sat-shop.de/antennen-wavefrontier/wave-torodial-t90-bundle.html
My german is non existant... Is this everything I need to attach it to the back of my house? Ok thats the dish.

Cable, Is there a type I should get? F-Connectors What are they used to connect to?

The brother has a Technomate 1500CI+, I want something similar, but maybe an updated/newer model. It has to take a viewing card. Recording off it via USB would be a bonus but not essential. I'm not sure what a CAM slot is so don't know if i need one. Don't want to break the bank either. Can anyone recommend something?

Is there anything else I might need. I'm located in Newbridge incase thats relevant

    Thanks
    David

have a look under the Assembling accessiories section, they've got links for cable and f-connectors to go with them. You screw/twist on the f-connectors to the ends of your leads when connecting them to the lnbs/diseqc switch and then to the back of the receiver.

Do you want it to supply just one receiver in one room or multiple receivers (universal single lnbs will be fine if just the one). Also, diseqc switch is fine if you just want a maximum of 4 sats fed from the dish. If more, then get an 8 way switch.
Are you ground mounting or wall mounting? If wall mounting, are you confident that position is not too exposed? These dishes are bigger than you'd imagine when you actually get to putting them together!
NB Whereas normally, dishes take a 50mm mount, T90's require a 60mm mount.

As regards cable, go for ct100 low loss cable.
Stick with hm sat - you won't find that dish cheaper elsewhere. Try and make sure you cover yourself as regards having all the bits and pieces required - save on delivery charge - and get a good price on the lot into the bargain. Also, paying by bank transfer will work out cheaper.

BTW, just in case your interested, I have a Golden Interstar receiver that I've been meaning to sell on. Has two cam slots and 1 card slot. Great receiver but in the end I never made proper use of it (was only used for fta channels) - not a scratch on it or remote - cam or card slots never used.

Technomate have replaced the TM1500CI+ with the TM5400CI+

Very similar receiver (remotes aren't interchangeable though despite being similar), but with added feature of USB port for recording (FTA channels only sadly) and software updates, and a seemingly more sensitive tuner (works better for me anyway than my old 1500). The DigitAlb Conax card will work in the built-in cardslot.

The Golden Interstar receiver mentioned by Eurorunner, I believe these use same chassis as Technomate.

There is one TM model that I believe can record encrypted programmes (provided you have your card), I think it's the 3500, though need to check on that.

Thanks for the info guys, it all appreciated.

Eurorunner, i'm going to pass on the offer of the receiver. After reading reviews and opinions I think I'm going to go with a technomate, hopefully get some kind of bundle with digitalb sports.

Does anyone know if the bundle above contains all I need to mount it to the back of the house or will I need to pick up extra bracketing or the infamous 60mm pole...

I'm going to attempt to install myself so Should i get a cheapie sat meter? I reckon it would take a lot of the guess work out

    Thanks again
    Dave

I'd rather recommend a portable tv on a dry day;)

No hassle. At very least, the golden interface box had same chassis at Byte mentioned - although i thought it was exactly the same equivalent of technomate box with only the branding in the difference..

Either 60mm mount as supplied by hm-sat if wall mounting or source 60mm pole if ground mounting.

Cause of the layout of the room the TV will be on the opposite side of the room from where the satellite cable will be brought in. i don't want a cable running around the floor or anything like that, so I looking at positioning the receiver by the window where the cable is brought in and hopefully sending the signal to the tv. Can anyone recommend a system that can do this?

Sorry, not aware of device that will allow that type of setup. Are there existing TV points in the room ...maybe supplying terrestrial?? In my case, when I moved into the house there were terrestrial points in every room. I managed to geta run of satellite cable through by attaching it to the existing cable and pulling it through - then terminating with a double wall plate for both terrestrial and sat.

Just thought I'd mention this in case its an option for you..

You could get a wireless video sender, I suppose. Does seem extreme when both receiver and TV are in the same room, but if needs must...

    Try Eurorunner's suggestion first though.

I purchased the dish from HM-Sat last year and the dish is supplied with a wall mount in the box and the mount is one of the best I have installed, the wall bolts were also supplied but were not the best so a trip to the local diy shop was required.

You should also consider purchasing extra LNB Holders, they are not very robust and when setting up the LNB's they are easily damaged.

Go with a meter, I used a portable tv in the early days but since purchased this Digisat Pro satellite meter - about £45 + p.p (a newer version - the Digisat LCD is also available). Much easier with a one person install on the ladder and it worked perfectly for me.
I purchased the meter here, a google search may get you a better price.

A very useful link I found when setting up my dish was the WaveFrontier Toroidal Antenna Installation Calculator.

    Good Luck with the install.

    Hi
Whats the best satellite to setup on if you are looking for 28.2,23,19,16,13,7east and 1west?

    Technomate 5400CI & T90 dish

Trying the install today. We are trying for 13,16, & 19.2. We are getting 90% Level on each with about 20% quality and no pic when switching between any of them. We are testing on a portable beside the dish. It doesn't matter where the LNB is on the LNB bar we still get 90% & 20% we had assumed that we would get a weaker/stronger signal by moving them. Don't have a sat meter.

    Has anyone any pointers ?

    Thanks Dave

You also have to adjust elevation. Start with the sat your centering on. After that, adjust skew...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,445 ✭✭✭✭watty

You can get a very strong signal by pointing dish at a wall or ground.

You really need a meter. The sat receiver menu will not be sensible at all unless you have a 1/2 decent signal AND the satellite actually has the transponder (freq, SR and Polarity) the receiver is set to.

Even a cheap analogue needle/beeper is minimum.

Bought a Sat Meter & Proper compass today. It will probably be next weekend when I get a chance to look at it again.

Skew 104.53° - No problem setting it, Chart on back of dish. Nice

Elevation 25.74° - Its easy to adjust with the T bar & 2 nuts, but exactly how do you measure the angle? I think I've it set correctly but this could be where my problem is.

Would recommend anyone attempting an install to get a Sat meter. I should have and maybe it would be up now

You can buy an angle finder - but a bit of a nuisance if you have no other use for it. Without that, its just trial and error until you hit your reference sat...

    Are these dishes heavy/bulky ?
I've seen the weight quoted as 14kg thats over 2 stone, seems quite high.
Planning on buying one to put on the South facing wall of house which is quite exposed in the Winter (and our recent summers :() .
Going to get one in white if possible to match the colour of the house and use white cabling to make it more discreet.
Will it be messy if I am using 4-6 different lnbs and a diseqc switch ?
    Thanks in advance

I'd have to say yeah, they are quite bulky. I was a bit surprised and my other half was not at all impressed.

Going from memory the dish is approx 1.1 wide & .9 m high & then there the reflector facing is again approx .6 wide & .3 high. It took 2 of us to put it in position, but apart from that it was ok. Spent a couple of hours putting it together, there were lots of parts though & the instructions were fairly basic.

Also the bracket to hold it to the wall is not big enough to turn the dish 90 degrees so you may as it looks like I have to put you lnbs off centre. I'm waiting for a proper compass & sat meter atm.

In the end I reckon it will be neat enough.

    Dave
