Querying income tax

I just got bonus in work, of which 48% was taken off me in tax. I'm not terribly au fait with how this works, but I can't see how this is possible.that I should have been taxed 42% right? If so, it's about 100 quid difference.

Besides, without any real knowledge in this sort of area, In general I'm assuming that my tax is correct, but that's a lot of trust in people I've never met. Is there any way of having them re-check my income tax and see if I'm owed anything?

    Thanks,

    Dave
