Abrupt endings

I was just watching Disney's Sword In The Stone. Now, much as I like the film is it just me or is the ending really abrupt?
Basically merlin shows up, tells Arthur he will be agreat king. The end
Its almost as if they ran out of drawing paper and said "Be done with it!" It felt more like the film stopped than ended par-se.

    Another one was Jurassic Park3.
They're in the jungle, then they're on the beach, then the army appear out of nowhere and... its over

I guess I'm just musing/ranting, but sudden endings can really ruin the experience of a movie for me. anyone else feel the same way?

Jeez thanks for reminding me about the disney film Sword in the Stone. That was one of my childhood movies when i was younger. Always watched it on tape about 8 or 10 years ago! Yeah its a preety bad ending tbh for a good kids film

'Deus Ex Machina' type endings can be very annoying alright. The Happening is one of the worst cases recently: dreadful film altogether, but
it all just stops at the end, for no reason in particular
    .

However it is still preferrable to the LotR style ending: where every character has to get a sentimental and overlong epilogue.

The worst ending of all time takes place in The Invasion. It pains me when I think just how stupidly atrocious it was given the amazinglty fantastic ending of the 70s version.

I remember watching Into the Wild and thought
WTF?? I thought he survived and wrote the book!

Spielberg's War Of The Worlds adaptation ended with a wimper rather than a bang. I know it's (relatively) faithful to the source material, but even so, the ending was very poorly handled.

off the top of my head,

    Time Bandits
    Holy Grail
Doom Generation (very abrupt & shocking)

    Cloverfield.
I was like, eh, where's the rest of the movie?

That's what made it a good film. Wasn't wrapped up in a neat little package like everything else. Very original.

Yeah "No country for old men" and "There will be blood" had abrupt endings but I felt they worked very well

Yeah but that was only the first in a trilogy so surely that's ok?

Someone already mentioned The Happening, another one of Shamalamadingdongs films "Signs" also seemed to end really abruptly too

    :pac: That made me laugh

Wasn't laughing at you cause I barely knew about the book when I saw the film but just imagining your look of confusion and disbelief.

I thought it was good though!

One that really stands out even though its a classic film is Full Metal Jacket, I think they ran out of money or something

Didn't find it original at all to be honest. Monster movie. Done. Hand-held camera. Done.
Movie was really short and the attempt to create a connection with the characters didn't work at all. If it was made by anyone else it would have been slaughtered. Because it was JJ Abrams people fawned all over it

It was original in that it was left open.
And every character was killed, and that the army didn't come in and blow the sh1t out of everything this time, after which we would normally be subjected to an American flag and 'this is the greatest country in the world' esque tripe.

Fair enough if that's your bag, but mine it ain't.

Ya, Abrams added to it an attraction and a certain level of expectancy, but he is not the sole reason the movie was popular!

Parrish, please don't go yapping about the end of a movie without using the "Spoiler" button.

It's not fair to anyone who hasn't seen it.

Thanks, was going to rent this pretty soon, but you've saved me the hassle.

Btw, the chick in the Crying game, wtf, she's a dude, just while we're giving away endings here.

    Jack
    Stepmom

Both are crap films but they deal with death in an overly sentimental way, unrealistic way, where they cut from their two terminally ill characters in an extremely happy moment, with not a hint of sadness or forboding for what will happen. Especially Jack, god that film was ****

After watching Donkey Punch the other night, i was just left wondering what the hell happened at the end. It just ended, very poor ending to an average movie.

Oh u got to see it?
I cant bring myself to actually pay for it.
Its the movie going equivalent of paying for a private dance at a lapdance club.

28 Days Later ended abruptly IMO.

I would also suggest Patriot Games did too, some of you might remember the last line!

I thought Lions for Lambs ended abruptly. Was disappointed.

The pretentious piece of ass that is Revolver.

I'll be honest, the effect of an abrupt ending on a film depends on the film's themes and the nature of the film itself - it's less of a problem for films that are about character development, but more of an issue for more plot/story-oriented films.

Of course, at least part of the issue of "abruptness" is down to audience expectations (in the sense that a disproportionate amount of Western films have a simplistic narrative structure imposed on them in order to "maximise the target demographic", which trains audiences to expect a simple package with an obvious beginning, middle and end).

"Sword of Doom" - A Kurasawa-esque film that was supposed to have a sequel but it was never made. Several sub-storyline are left unfinished but the main one, that of the protaganist swordsman who slowly goes insane ends in the most sudden and epic way that it actual manages to completely work better than anyone would have expected... in my opinion. This unintentional ending has also got copied a LOT by hollywood!

It just wouldn't be the same without that final scene and it makes up for all the loose ends...It's the quintisential sudden ending :D

That was a great ending! Was a shame clear and present danger didn't pick up from the same point!

Pirates of the caribeen: Dead mans chest.

The movie just stopped. Although I was the only one to say "What the F*ck?" as the credits began to roll so maybe everybody else was expecting it. I just thought all three movies were gonna stand as seperate stories rather than one single story and the second two connected.

i found the original Italian job to have quite an abrupt ending. But i loved it:D

The animated LOTR movie : http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077869/

I think the ending is about halfway through The Two Towers, a narrator jumps into to basically say Happily ever after.

The new animation spliced with real footage was costing a fortune so the plug was pulled.
