Vaccinations - an alternative way?

I'm travelling to Thailand in September, so I'll soon have to get sorted for vaccinations. From what I've heard, the consultation and a few shots will probably be €200 or more. I'm wondering if anyone has gone down the route of buying the shots and getting a doctor/nurse to administer them?

I'm travelling to Bangkok, Chiang Mai and some islands. I'm covered for tetanus for a few more years, so the only other two I need will be typhoid and hepatitis A. I've discovered that you can purchase a typhoid/Hep A shot all in one in the pharmacy for about €95. My mother is a nurse, so she can administer the vaccination (for free!)

I'm wondering if anyone else has done it this way or if I'm missing something? I wouldnt take risks with my health for any amount of money, but if it's all the same I'd prefer to save €100 for Thailand!

I've just thought of Malaria tablets - do I need a prescription or can these be purchased over the counter?

Check a site like http://www.tmb.ie/exodus/index.asp for what you need, maybe ask others who have been to Thailand? Or your mother might be able to ask someone at work? At the GPs I used to work in, we used to only charge a nominal amount (15-25 euro) for injections, depending whether or not we had to order them in, find out what they needed for the country etc.

Buying a vaccine OTC will probably save you a bit, but be careful with storage and stuff, some of them are marked to only be out of a fridge for an hour before they must be used.

Malaria tablets are prescription only I think... might want to have an actual consultation with a GP afterall, as some give a lot of sideeffects, or might interact with meds you're already on.
