    hi guys
can anybody enlighten me as to why my 2003 e200 automatic jolts forward after the car comes to a stop and also as the car is taking off again . This only appears to happen when the "s" button is selected on the gearbox but is not noticeable when the "w" button is selected. Also the car seems to hesitate or shudder on acceleration regardless of which setting it is in. any ideas or advice most welcome

I don't know what mileage is on your car or if it only started doing it, my auto is a high miler and behaves this way. I am told it's a damaged clutch/clutches within the box. it drives okay though and doesn't seem to get any worse. I have learned to live with it. Mostly the effects are not too bad. The odd time it would snap your neck off.

Your car may not have such high mileage. A gearbox oil change couldn't hurt and maybe a filter. I am also sure I read somewhere there are adjustments that can be made.

thanks for the swift reply , my car only has 46k mls . I just afraid it is a sign of the gearbox packing up and €000's in repairs. The fact that it only affects the "s" setting and not the "w" is it possible it is an electrical or software fault rather than mechanical, or indeed if it is a damaged clutch are these very expensive to fix

S is summer setting and moves the car off in 1st gear. W is winter mode, and moves off in 2nd gear (to stop wheels spinning when moving off on icy roads or snow).

at that time, mb were recommending sealed for life boxes, but since then, it has become more known that the oil should be changed.

how long have you had the car for?

i only have it a couple of months but alas i bought it privately as it appeared to be in really good condition. Does this mean the first gear is damaged and is it likely to deterioate and work through th rest of the gearbox. Also can it be fixed or would I have to replace the whole gearbox

The symptoms you describe are typical of a problem with the operation of the torque converter lockup. Your model has lockup on all gears. It could also be a faulty torque converter. The torque converter lockup can be switched off to help prove this.

This needs to be looked at asap. What needs to be done is as follows –
Trans fluid needs to be inspected for glycol contamination.
Trans sump removed to check for swarf.
    Fluid exchange and new filter.
Code read with a proper tool (star tester) and adaption cleared and relearned.

If there is glycol present the rad will need to be changed.
If there is a lot of swarf the trans may need to be rebuilt but it would be worth continuing with the rest of the list above.

Trans problems on these are very common. The rad also has the trans cooler and it leaks coolant into the trans.

    Could'nt agree more.

Common fault on you model is faulty eng. radiator which has the auto g/box oil cooler built in. Eng. coolant mixes with the g/box oil thus problems.

Edit: If your in the Dublin area contact Fergus Conway, Dublin 12, you'll get his details on the internet.
